Was anybody on here at the launch yesterday or used both the Telecom and Vodafone mobiles? What's the opinion on them?

This article is incredibly low on details, and is pretty much nothing more than press release from Vodafone.

Yes, it is only for certain models... Funny that the advertising on that page is for a Telecom NZ mobile phone...

Kevin Kenrick must be gutted, Telecom have been hyping up PTT to talk for months and promoting it as coming soon and Vodafone beats them to it! :-)

The next big thing will be awaiting the arrival of some more phones..

Interesting.. Telecom seems to make a business out of selling phones with features that aren't active yet.. At least, that's the impression I got. One of their ads on TV at the moment says something to the effect of "You'l be able to do such-and-such in 2005." To me, that implies you can't do it now...

Also, this page at Nokia http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,,62520,00.html seems to suggest PTT is available on other handsets that Vodafone is selling at the moment..

The Nokia 5140 supports PTT but I was lead to believe it's not fully compatible with the PTT Vodafone have deployed (as in you can use it's PTT with another 5140 but not a Motorola), does anybody know this for sure? Vodafone NZ are one of the first Vodafone networks to go live with PTT so it will which pricing people prefer, the Vodafone usage based or Telecom time based.

5140 is ptt capable. I believe that the VFNZ PTT is motorola software and there may be compatability issues? but i have heard that Team NZ used 5140s in their ptt trial

Voda's press release

lists the Motorola v303p as the first phone off the block for PTT start on Monday.

The Nokia 5140 was trialled in the tests and no mention if this is be enabled for PTT on go live date at the above info.

It will be a new concept instead of sending a txt you can press a button like a walkie takie and have a quick chat.

The price of the service has yet to be announced but as its done through GPRS we will have to wait and see.

The pricing was featured in the article on Stuff. $25 per month for 500 "uses" of the service, I am assuming that means 500 pushes of the PTT button.

Yep. The article on Stuff.co.nz mentions that Vodafone will charge on a 'per-push' basis, while Telecom will charge on a per-minute basis.

$25 for 500 uses works out at $0.05 per use which seems like good value compared to the cost of sending a text message. It's interesting that they're not interested in promoting the service to consumers in the immediate future, because I think there would be a significant market for it.

It will be interesting to see if the PTT prices require the purchase of blocks of 'uses,' or be sold one at a time like SMS/MMS..

Kevin Kenrick has said that Telecom PTT will be time based billing (ie per minute) not per session based.

Yip - P2T on Telecom launches on Monday and is $10 incl GST for 300 minutes.

First 62 days of the service are free.

The billing system doesnt handle charging for over 300 mins yet so it is flat rate temporarily, and Telecom has said they will offer 1 months notice before introducing overage charges
