Aussie Text messaging is 25 cents each. That is NZ$139.00 for 500 texts. Go that competition!

Mentioning those prices is fine however you're fogetting that bundling is now HUGE in oz and it's now what most people are on.

On Voda for example you pay 60c per min for calls (billed per 1s no 1 min minimum) + a 20c connection charge. SMS costs 25c. However when you go on a bundle you can get A$230 worth of value for A$49 meaning that effectively you're paying almost 1/5 of those prices. You can send almost 1000 SMS's for your A$49 and depending on SMS usage and how long your calls are you could make at least a 300 or so mins worth of calls any time of the day to any network. All the networks now have these bundled deals and are promoting them very heavily. Vodafone's super cap is A$149 for around $1200 worth of services. Compare that to what you get here for $149..

We really are getting ripped off here in NZ with no competition..:-(

Telecom, Telstra & Vodafone all competition to each other arent they?
What constitutes competition these days? 4 operators? 6?

Prices are lower than what they used to be, and another operator in town would lower prices further. How many operators, and what prices are needed before its considered a competitive market?

I guess one stumbling block is that Voda is GSM and Telecom is CDMA. It makes it more difficult to scare customers away to another network because they not only have to buy new handsets, but new plans etc.

One thing I liked over in China was that if you weren't happy with the service that China Unicom (on GSM) provided, you could ring up and tell them that you'll drop your account and switch over to China Mobile. It was in their interest to keep you on their network.

Because, at the end of the day - you could just pick up a China Mobile sim card, put it in your phone and your with a different provider.

I always get the impression if you talk to certain people representing certain networks that their line is 'So what - what are you going to do, buy a new handset, buy a new plan on a different network whoms pricing is quite similar to our own?'.

As for telstra, I haven't really looked at them but its just my understanding that they resell Vodas plans - I'll have to look the plans up sometime.

Note this list may be incorrect. To the best of my attempts I have gotten most correct.

Main Telco providers and piggybackers.

Telstra (CDMA 1RXTT/EVDO) (GSM)
- 3 roaming
-Austar mobile
-Communic8
-Cellular 1
-look mobile
-Mobile innovations
-M8
-Primus
-Southern Cross

Optus (GSM)
-SimPlus
-Virgin
-iSim
-(b) Digital
-one.tel
-Dingo Blue (Defunct)

Vodafone (GSM)
-Martin Dawes
-Revolution Tel
-AAPT

Hutchinson 3
-UMTS WCDMA 3

Orange (CDMA 1RXTT)
-Orange

There are 3 main providers. + orange cdma. the rest are resold services

Remember Freedom, X-Cell, Gold? whom piggybacked off the AMPS network?

x-cell users got free txt, Gold users used to get random freecall periods, all sorts of other problems occured, all these t'com piggys have all now been absorbed or just failed on their own (xcell, freedom)

They have issues with them here also which are of great cost benefit to some lucky users :-) aka free stuff like GPRS & TXT... my I-mate was never so much fun!!!!!!!

AFAIK Orange is just a franchise, which is currently held by Hutchison Whampoa, which is also the owner of 3 in Australia (now shared with Telstra and AAPT).

Optus are also GSM only and not CDMA as listed. They are however joining with Vodafone for their WCDMA networks.

The point is Australia has a lot of competition in the mobile industry, in part because they are all GSM operators and more importantly because they have number portability. Telstra & Optus still lock their handsets and offer cheap pricing locking you into contracts but there are certainly a lot of options available.

I have the impression only Telstra operates two networks (CDMA and GSM), while Orange is CDMA only. All other networks are GSM - including Optus. Check GSM World for Australian coverage too.

A quick visit to orange.net.au reveals that, indeed, they are a CDMA network. It's interesting that they've opted for CDMA considering that they operate a GSM network in the UK.

The other thing that I noticed is that their range of handsets is pretty dreadful, even compared to Telecom New Zealand.

Orange is only a brand name - Hutchinson own the Orange name in Australia but the Orange brand itself and UK networks are owned by France Telecom.

There were no GSM licences available when they rolled out their CDMA network in Oz so they didn't have a choice. Their licence isn't nationwide either, it only covers some of the major cities and elsewhere you roam on Telstra CDMA. You've really got to wonder why they do such stupid thing over there with their licencing.
