Out of Aus. The board of telstraclear has signed off ericsson to build a 3g network for them.
This has somewhat been coming for a while and it is under current regulation likely to be small scale with forced roaming on Voda

What a leech attitude - build network and cover the densest population area, then use legislation to not have to bother building network elsewhere. Its just as bad as running fiber around a city, but not out to the suburbs where they just resell someone elses products.

I wonder if i could build burger bars in Auckland, but be allowed to buy Big Macs at wholesale rates set by the government in say, Te Awamutu, and resell them? (With maccas having no say in the matter).

(Any ill-will percieved in this post is not directed at the original poster!!! - i am just trying to provoke some conversation)

the only way this will be beneficial is if they provide some true competition, with competitive, sustainable pricing, and innovative ideas & actions. Simply providing cloned services at the same price isnt going to cut the mustard.

While I think it's being a cheapskate there is no disputing there currently is and will be continuted growth in MVNO's. I don't see any real difference between what Telstra are doing and what Virgin do in all the countries they operate in. Vodafone were very anti reselling services to virtual networks in the past but are now that networks such as Vigrin & Easy Mobile are taking off in a huge way they are going around begging to provide the network.

At the end of the day Vodafone are the only network in NZ that Telstra customers will be able to roam on. Even though they aren't controlling the customers they are providing a network, getting paid for it, and don't have to worry about customer support or credit issues. Sounds like a good deal to me!

My money is still on Telecom joining forces with Telstra to roll out a nationwide WCDMA network..They are in bed in oz where they both own bug chunks of 3 and it would be logical to extend that relationship and bring the 3 brand to NZ.

Absolutely, but any agreements to co-exist on networks should be exactly that, a business agreement between telcos, not some government regulated handout.

It would be great to see the '3' brand here!

How interesting, heard rumours about something like this a while ago. But just rumours, AFAIC.

As for Telstra using Vodafone's network, I think people don't realise something interesting: while data and content are new services mobile operators sell, voice (in all its incarnations, including VoIP, POTS, etc) is a killer app, and an operator main asset is still its network, because this is the carrier for all other services - look at how Telecom stick to its.

voice is the killer app.. and i dont believe it is going to change, there will alway be talk of the next killer app but i am not convinced it will arrive swiftly

I suppose depending on the regulated arrangements VF might welcome such a move as it will help justify the expenditure on their network but that is looking at it independent of customer considerations.

I think good on telstra clear for making the step, they are taking advantage of their situation and the conditions in their environment but if regulation was to change.. it would be an interesting proposition.

I think their network would be a while away, interestingly if the reports are correct roll out could be somewhat faster as ericsson are doing the telstra roll out in aus

At the end of the day i would probably agree with you if i was a telstra shareholder.

Its all about the almighty dollar - not about a fast reliable competitivly priced service for Joe Bloggs businessman.

Farmer Brown owns a massive dairy farm in the central North Island. To milk his 500 head of cattle Farmer Brown spent $1M building a massive automated milking shed with the latest technology.

Old Macdonald lives next door to Farmer Brown. He has only 100 head of cattle and an old manual, labour intensive milking shed. Old Macdonald is jealous of Farmer Brown; he also wants to grow his herd to 500 head but doesn't see why he should spend $1M building a new miking shed when there is a perfectly good one next door.

So, Old Macdonald complains to the government. He argues that investing another $1M would be a waste of time and money because Farmer Brown has already done the hard work and there is no justification in having two massive milking sheds side by side. The government agrees with Old Macdonald and passes a private members bill late one night. The bill mandates that Old Macdonald can continue milking 100 head on his own property but the other 400 head can be milked in Farmer Brown’s shed. Not only that, but the government also sets the price that Old Macdonald pays Farmer Brown.

To cope with the extra capacity required Farmer Brown realises that he would need to invest a further $500K expanding his milk shed. However he works out that Old Macdonald will not pay him enough to cover the extra investment.

In frustration Farmer Brown decides enough is enough. He dismantles his milking shed, sends his cows to the freezing works and sells the land to a hippy commune. With the money he leaves NZ for good and retires on the Gold Coast.

Does that sound fair? Surely not, but what is the difference with Telecommunications? Telstra Clear is an Aussie company that keeps crying foul and the NZ government continues to pander to them.

So true Jama. I might go see the people that live next door and see if they have a bigger TV than me and go ask Helen to make it law that I can use it. So much for the days of if you want something do it yourself. No lets just go take it off the people that have invested 100s of millions of $$ in New Zealand already and screw them over.

I fail to see your point johnr. Vodafone aren't being forced to offer access to their network for free. They are being paid for access to their network. Look at what is happening in the world at the moment, MVNO's are the future on mobile networks and companies like Vodafone are slowly realising that after being very anti them. I fail to see how this is really any different to an MVNO - Vodafone obviously weren't willing to let Telstra become a proper MVNO in NZ and give them the deal that wanted. Vodafone have pitched some very good deals at existing MVNO's to try and get them to switch and now have MVNO's operating on their networks in numerous countries including Australia. As to why things are so different in NZ amazes me.
