It won't work in a manner that is very useful for you. Telecom operates a 2100 3g network, in built up areas of congestion. Using this phone on telecom would cause you grief.

I wouldn't buy the version at mobicity. I suspect it is the original version. The 3g spec is for TD-SCDMA 2100 which no network in NZ uses in any form.

Unfortunately some of the parallel imports around are less than honest when the say the fone will work on Telecom 3G.

imo I think buying that phone from anywhere may be a roll of the dice.
If you are currently on Telecom and want a cheap chinese phone I'd go with a Zopo (as I mentioned earlier). All their phones are wcdma 850/2100 wcdma and will be a much better build quality than the Hongmi.
