Media "conversions"

I did the usual spate of testing messages...

You can send anything you want via 027 to 021 and the reciver can view/save the file.

Images don't seem to rescale which is nice. but they seem to be streched out to fit the recipients phone!!!!!!
Sending from a portrait format 021 to a landscpae format 027 just stretches the image looking quite silly.

MMF files will be deleted instantly on the Telecom server though the alert push will still come through. (failed download)
MID files are simply removed, the rest of the message (images, text) comes through fine.
QCP files (voice recording/tones etc) cannot be sent from 021 phones anyway.
AMR files when sent to 027 will download a substitute message saying "this message had an attachment your phone cannot play, please contact sender for details"

Testing done with a NON lightsurf phone, Samsung n391

Phone supports QCP recordings and SMAF (.MMF) ringtones and MID ringtones along with JPG images,

I'll do a test with my LightSurf handset and post results.

Can someone test the AMR sending to an 027 Nokia?

What is the price vf-> email? Still 20c?

$0.20 cents to a Telecom mobile or an 021 or 029 mobile or email address

After 30 November 2005
$0.20 cents to a Telecom mobile or email address
$0.50 to an 021 or 029 mobile or email address

So what is the price tm-> email after 11/30? 20 or 50?

paradoxsm: Something new to me is the 50c to send overseas on Vodafn.. i'm sure it was 20c! can anyone clarify? though it's good to see a Video PXT finally a decent price now, $1 was too much.

I got an SMS from Vodafone about a month ago advising that exciting new features were coming soon and that as a result PXTs to Vodafone Australia would cost 50c from Sept 19th (or words to that effect I can't recall the exact wording). That in itself was interesting because although Vodafone initially promoted PXT interconnection between oz and nz when they launched PXT but they then never claimed the service was actually a supported service and it was very patchy at times with messages sometimes going through and sometimes disappearing into thin air despite being charged for them.

Hopefully we'll see PXT to all Vodafone networks soon, while I was away it's interesting to see that you now get CID info on virtually all European networks and it's obvious after all these years that Vodafone are finally deciding to standardise things across all countries, something that is so obvious yet has taken many years to start implimenting!

I'm just hoping Vodafone will launch their Passport Roaming service here soon, it's hardly fair that most of the European Vodafone network customers can roam in NZ and take advantage of the cheaper service yet we can't when we are over there..:-(

sbiddle when roaming on vodafone networks overseas its now $10.00 per meg same as the casual rate in New Zealand and $30.00 per meg on other carriers. Check out the vodafone NZ website.

Yeah I was aware of that John, made sending PXT's affordable!!

What I was meaning was the Passport roaming for voice. With this you pay a fixed price for incoming calls no matter how long you talk for (ie a UK customer can answer a call while roaming in New Zealand or any Vodafone network while roaming and pay 75p for a call up to 60 minutes long). To make a call to back to the UK or a national call within the country you are roaming in you pay a 75p connection charge + your plan rate per minute or included minutes if you have them. If you're a customer on any of the other Vodafone networks the rates are similair - Vodafone Ireland charge 79c euro connection charge, Vodafone Hungary charge 199HF (about NZ$1.40)

One other interesting thing John, while I was in the UK I caught up with a friend in billing over there & discussed the issue of being charged for incoming roaming calls diverted to voicemail. Vodafone UK & their European networks don't charge for diversion to voicemail while roaming and he was very surprised to know that Vodafone NZ charge for this.

When your in the US or China you pay for incoming calls on you mobile, Just casue one opco does it does it mean the rest have to be like sheep, So what if Vodafone NZ charge its clear on there site so whats the issue, They are not hiding it from anybody. The fee is there if you don't like divert your calls to +6421700100 or answer your phone! TCNZ charge for caller ID and whoosh does not. Some people need less things to worry about!!

If anyone wants to start a new thread about roaming charges, you will be sure to generate some replies....

And now we go back to our regular topic of MMS between 021/027

So is the 021 > 027 and vice versa working well? I havent had a chance to try it - are pics coming out okay? Are sound files getting through? Anyone wasted money testing video sending?

Disenchanted,, see my previous post, images come through okay though get stretched from portait (sharps on 021) to landscape (027 phones) looking very stupid indeed!!

Voice files, Voicetones, Ringtones are totally no-go due to Telecom's end blocking them.

I haven't sent a video yet but I was just looking on the Voda website

apparently Video PXT is JUST 20c to Voda and just 50c to Telecom and Voda Oz until March.
Stoked to see such a cheap price for Video!

I'll have to test it to see if it works well, but at least it won't be burning thru the money.

Did you have to do anything special on the n391 to get it working? I'm testing with my Moto e398 to my wife's n391. Sending from her to me (027-021) works fine, but when I send pics to her, the message just shows an "X" where the image should be. Any ideas?

i'd guess that the file type that the n391 creates by default is also supported on the e398 - so coming through fine from 027-021. but that the default image file type on e398 is not supported on n391 and so cannot be displayed. you could try sending the image she sent you back and see if that works.

Can you find the image type somehow?
It's probably a GIF, which i suspect n391 cannot display.

Hrrrm. the photos from the 398 are jpgs when I transfer them via bluetooth.
Also tried different resolutions and fine/standard settings.

Guess it's just an annoying incompatibility.
