Hahaha, "Alibaba", that name alone won't be attracting many customers!

Hmm.... I know the buyer of the "N85" off Trademe... he gave it to me to see if I could get it working properly. The phone was a joke, horrendous menu design (not Nokia obviously), a Carl Zeuss lens... oh dear. Told him it was a fake and he decided he was going to get his money back.

Well, this story has a happy ending because instead of getting a refund, he accepted the offer of an N900 instead! Laughing This is not a joke and I am afraid I will have to check it out again and deliver more bad news!

By the way all, very large preview at my-symbian, and another large look at the OS at mobile-review in case you missed them.

Great find NZTechfreak

this is of concern...taken from the end of the review...

"What's not: (maybe just on the tested prototype?)

  • no handwriting recognition

  • storage memory for installable applications limited to ridiculous 256 MB, all the remaining gigabytes available for documents and data files only

  • lack of d-pad (it's an Nseries device, so some people would like to play games on it!)

  • the keyboard is nice, but could be even better (to attract Communicator users)

  • the display seems to be easily scratchable; screen protector or carrying case are recommended to protect it

  • lens cover does not scratch the lens (like on the N97) but it does scratch the part of the casing it slides over

  • since the memory card is hot swappable, why there's no access to it from the outside?

  • some sort of hardware "Home" button quickly switching to the Desktop would be really useful

  • no audio equalizer

  • Nokia, PLEASE, add voice dialing!

  • no Java support, even just Java MIDP

  • very limited support for Profiles, only "General" and "Silent", no possibility to create own profiles, no timed Profiles, etc.

  • the touch display "de-calibrating" from time to time on the tested unit, probably due to early, pre-release firmware.

  • no MMS support.

"
Particularly the 256MB for installed apps.... -surely this will be changed - installing MAPS of another country (Aus=177MB) and its all gone..

Acccording to maemo.org - this is being addressed and should have 1GB for installs - but not confirmed to date...

It was indeed a cheapo, the "Zeuss" was a mis-spelling that should ring alarm bells. Can't wait to see his "N900" though. I notice the bad feedback is gone from the seller. Shame.

@canterbury read mobilereview review...its much better, I read it in full last night...it states the app memory is now 2GB, which is consistant to other reports and rumors I have read...as for much of the rest of your concerns, Nokia are going to code and eventually include them eg. MMS just they have not had time to include for the N900 release. I have no concerns.

Nice...

I thought I would print it out so I can read and study it in detail, and be ahead of the game once its released...

100 pages...phew!

If I get through all that, and actually remember it all by the time I actually have my N900...I should be able to write some insightful and informative blogs on the device.
