Here in little old NZ, mobile data can be had for $49.95 for 1GB or $59.95 for 2GB and you get speeds as fast as the network will deliver. Well in Aussie it aint that simple.

Telstra have recently launched 'Next G' which is their brand for HSDPA. Check this out for price confusion:

G Fast = limited (crippled) to 256kbps (GF)
Super G Fast = up to 1.5Mbps (SGF)

You can choose from time based or volume based plans. Simple?

Time ~
10 hours SGF = A$29.95 p/month
20 hours SGF = A$49.95 p/month

Volume ~
1GB GF = A$79.95 p/month
400MB SGF = A$79.95 p/month
1GB SGF = A$109.95 p/month
3GB SGF = A$199.95 p/month

All plans in NZ are Super G Fast and are approximately A$67.49 cheaper for the 1GB plan. By my estimation that would place NZ well ahead of Aussie in the OECD for mobile data pricing and speeds.

I'm probably looking in the wrong part of Telstra's un-navigable website, but I can only find the $5 for 1MB and $8 for 3MB occasional data pack pricing.

Assuming 1,024MB per GB, that's between AS$2,731 and A$5,120 for what costs NZ$49.95 here. Errm... surely I got my maths wrong there?

Sorry should have clarified

Just to make it even more confusing this is a Bigpond service but you would have thought that Telstra would have a link on their website....

juha: Interesting - EV-DO on Telstra is cheaper.

Wow that really is price confusion. I wonder what happens if I aready pay $59 for 1GB on EVDO? This would be the first time I have seen mobile data get more expensive with a new network... usually it just gets cheaper. I have never understood why Telstra differentiate the price through speed limits and why they charge for time. They did the same thing with CDMA 1x.
