Doing a mobile network scan in Tauranga.I see the Network NZ 04 (530-04) comes up. That must be the new Telstra clear network. Vodafone is 530-01. Who has the network id 02 and 03?

530 01 Vodafone NZ
530 02 Telecom NZ CDMA
530 03 Walker Wireless
530 04 TelstraClear
530 28 Econet

I know Walker Wireless don't tecnically exist any longer but it's what the ITU still list.

....And I have a few million dollars (20.4 million to be exact) kept in trunk cases over in Nigeria. Don't worry - my buddies will hold it in a bank vault for a $1000 USD a month fee till I need it. I know I can trust them!

*yeah right*

Well, the TCL network must be a start. As for nationwide, it'll probably depend a lot on whether or not the MED decide to offer the entire 800/900 spectrum lots to the current holders for renewal. (See discussion paper.)

it's a lot cheaper to build a nationwide network with spectrum at 800 or 900 MHz than solely with spectrum at 1800 (or higher). This is the source of one of the spats between Econet and Vodafone.

But it's a very stupid spat. Vodafone have spent $$ buying the 900MHz management rights and can do what they like with them. If their issue is with anybody it should be with the Government who let Vodafone acquire the 3 x 900MHz GSM bands available in NZ, something I disagree with. If you look back though Tex wasn't interested in the last lot of crown owned 900MHz spectrum when MR's where sold to Vodafone because he saw 3G as the future (at 2100MHz) and GSM as an obsolete technology. He obviously hadn't ever done a Google search to realise SFR and Vodafone were heavily involved with work on developing UMTS networks using 900MHz spectrum and didn't even lodge an objection with the Ministry of Economic Development at the time. Vodafone had foresight, Econet didn't.

...and hence one of the reasons why nobody, either in government, the telecommunications industry or the public, take Tex seriously.

Hence the reason he was obviously given the boot. It will be interesting to see whether we get another NZer take over at Econet or somebody from overseas.

The Line said on Friday there was speculation it was to be someone from Orange. Not sure of the connection between Orange and Econet though.
