HI,

I am unable to SMS friends in the UK. They are on the t-mobile network (which I dont know much about), and I have a Nokia 3105 on the 027 network.

Is there any way to allow me to do SMS them via changing settings on my phone, or failing that, is there somewhere I can check for network to network compatibility and track future developments or contracts to allow this to happen?

I'm the opposite, I am T-Mobile GSM(USA) trying to text CDMA 27(NZ), I can only reply...sometimes, no direct path; I do get text directly from 27.

I got a pretty promp reply from Telecom via email, you might want to do the same to get the most direct info.

The number of overseas networks you can TXT from an 025/027 phone in NZ is very limited. Many are only 1 way with no reply path (ie you can txt friends overseas but they can't send a reply). There is a list on the Telecom website with details. Later on this year however you'll be able to send and receive messages from most GSM networks around the world with no problems.

That's right... Telecom NZ is working on expanding the SMS network connectivity. Have a look at this news.

But Telecom have will obviously have to ditch their $10 txt or come up with a solution before they can launch such a service for very obvious reasons, ie NZ becoming an international SMS spam haven - one of the main reasons why Vodafone can't/won't compete with $10 TXT.

If it's not already... I know of some interesting cases, but can't go in details, because of NDA. But it's simple to someone to use a prepaid mobile for sending messages, and then dump it, moving to another one later...

The biggest advantage Telecom have is that it's nowhere near as easy to hook a CDMA phone up to a PC to send SMS's as it is with a GSM one where in 5 minutes you can have an old PC and phone and be sending them. Once Vodafone disconnect your SIM it's only $30 for a new one...If they then block the IMEI from the network you just throw out the phone another $50 and you'll have another 5110 and new SIM and be back in business. If you start doing it with Telecom and they disconnect the phone it's another $200 at least for a new one.
Having said that though for an operseas spammer to set up if they can get tens of thousands of messages off for $200 before getting chopped off it may pay - the question then is that the overseas networks are going to start chopping of access like in the old days when many networks started blocking msgs from mtnsms

Re CDMA 027 SMS to overseas
I have done many tests to friends in Italy on WIND and also the 3G network there.
I can send an SMS from CDMA but they cannot reply either with +64 or 0064 .

I had same results to a Megafon number in Russia ( St Petersburg )
and also to Cingular in Washington State USA !

At the moment GSM is the best for international SMS !

I'm still looking for someone in the USA with a Verizon CDMA to do a test !

I checked that Telecom Site I can send SMS to some on the list but return messages
is another Issue ! I have just arranged a test shortly to a person on Verizon CDMA in the USA .
Will post results as soon as I can do some tests with CDMA TDMA and GSM

Things have changed for my US T-Mobile to Telecom New Zealand texting.
It's great news really, I'm able to txt directly now.

To text I have to start with 011 instead of + or the 00; for example 011 64 27 then the number.
When incomming txt from New Zealand arrives it shows as +64, that's why I can't reply cause that's a 00 64 number.
Hope this helps some folks.

Has anybody on 027 Telecom NZ been able to do 2 -way Txt with someone on Verizon in the USA?
I can Txt ok to USA contact on Verizon. Replying to me, they are showing Txts clearing Verizon but they never arrive to my 027 cell in NZ. Any clues on where they are going? Telecom website says they have 2 way with Verizon.
