You used to be able to send and receive SMS from ICQ, this was a very useful feature - sending was free (and still is), you have a proper keyboard to type on, and my friends without cellphones have ICQ.

ICQ has upgraded their system so that the SMS phone number is the ICQ number with a 3 digit suffix (481 I think), which is very cool but it looks like they've switched their SMS provider to do it. Now we can receive SMS from ICQ but if you try to reply it says invalid number, apparently the send/recieve functionality is still there though so I'm assuming this is a Vodafone<->ICQ's Telco issue?

Infact right now (today) you can't even send with ICQ, but I'm presuming/hoping that that's just a temporary thing.

Does anybody know what the story is?
Is vodafone even aware that a lot of people would like this working?
Any advice on who I should contact about this?

Not being able to recieve SMS from any internet connected service or application was one of the reasons telecom mobiles were a joke around here - it was a good reason to use vodafone, but one of the most used applications has just lost half its functionality.

This might be one for you johnr ,
I'm looking for a list of networks/countries that Vodafone NZ has arrangements with for SMS.
For example I cannot send a message to Italy's 3G network and they cant respond either.
But I can send to TIM, WIND and Voda IT on GSM

I'm sure there are more networks / countries SMS capable, compared with the ROAMING countries list.

It has to do with what networks we have roaming agreements with and if they decide to block incoming text from Foreign networks, We stop no incoming or out text messages

From there its out of our hands sorry

Johnr: The SMS to/from other networks has nothing to do with the roaming agreement unless the mobile is on roaming. SMS to/from is sorted through a seperate and unrelated contract through sub-carriers. From there, it is the networks decision to block or not.

Yes it does have to do with Roaming Agreements the only time it does not is if Vodafone customers in NZ are texting to a CDMA network in the states but this is very recent.

Some networks vodafone have roaming agreements will still block incoming text to there subscribers from customers in NZ but there are only about 3 out of the 100 or so

= )

I beleive we share the same source of our information. If this is correct, you might wish to read the blue lettering and be informed that it is not 100% correct.

It is the companies option to remove the block at anytime without roaming negotiation. This has happened before and Vodafone NZ was simply never advised. Happends constantly with roaming concerned.

If Vodafone NZ have a roaming agreement with another network. The foregin networks that we have roaming agreements with are the ones that place blocks on incoming text message from other foregin networks. It is that networks choice. In the case where text are going to the USA to CDMA networks that is seperate agreement again and is fairly new and works in a very different way. In this case ONLY we don't need a roaming agreement.

The GSM World website lists all the GSM networks around the world and also fairly accurate lists of their roaming partners. Here's their list for Vodafone NZ
