Hi Guys, Looking at getting a phone for the boy but the theory is it will only be used in emergencies and not all the time!! Ok, so I might be dreaming but as the title says are there any plans where I buy a sim, load up $20 (or maybe $50??) and don't have to put anymore money on it for a year?

The Freebees plans from Vodafone don't need to be topped up...

Top up once, get a bonus number of Minutes and Texts ( and/or data), they expire after a month, but then you are still left with your original amount you topped up, to be used at a set rate. I.E 20c a text, or an amount per minute.

No Prepay connection needs to be topped up once a month to keep it active but from reading your post once the credit runs out it will need to be topped up again before services can be used

The actual mobile number does not expire most numbers are valid for 13 months since last topup and credit expires 12 months after last topup unless another topup happens and then all the credit will roll over for another 12 months

I bought a Vodafone NZ SIM when we were in NZ last February, it says it expires February 2013, so I will top up another $20 on it then so I can keep the number active for when we move to NZ in 2015. 1 year is pretty decent!

Every prepaid system works like this. You simply load credit and it lasts up to a year which is pretty decent. It comes off at 9c/12c/20c/etc a text and 39/44/60c/etc per minute depending on what provider you're with. The fact that you can buy monthly packs of minutes/texts/data might be confusing you, but all this is doing is taking a chunk off your credit each month - you dont have to be on these addon packs.

Right, but the op wants a plan that last for ages, which the vf ones don't. I.el top up 20 bucks and have that last for maybe a year.

The best option for him is just to use pay as you go rather than a time based plan. I.e. Just pay per minute or per txt.

All carriers offer that, however The best carriers for this in terms of price are 2degrees or skinny, depending on what phone you have. If you have a phone that works on both, then skinny is the cheapest by a small margin.

If you are a Telecom customer put the phone on your home account. It's called 'one bill' or something like that. Pay similar rates to prepay but they just charge any usage to the home phone account. Prepay rates without the hassle.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
