Has anyone tried sending a text message via the GPRS setting ?? rather than the normal message number ?? Does it work ?? If so do you get charged 20c or just the GPRS fee ??

It works fine, but it still has to go through a message centre, so you still incur the 20c charge.

My old Ericsson T39 had a setting somewhere to determine whether SMS was to be sent via GPRS or via GSM data. From memory, I found that it worked fine on either setting, but it was able to send messages slightly faster when on GPRS mode.

I have just had a look for the same setting in my T610, and I can't find it, so I am inclined to assume that the latest models send all messages via GPRS. Someone with greater technical knowledge may be able to clarify.

I did a test last night on the 6310i I found a setting for SMS to go via GPRS
So I tried it . The message was sent ok But the G symbol for GPRS did not appear, so it looks like the SMS went the normal way
Checking the Billing on Line the sms did get taken off the free 20 per month allocation from the 300 mins plan and the number the SMS was sent to appeared on the Billing as normal

I wonder what that setting is for then, if it still sends SMS using the normal method when you switch it to GPRS mode? As I mentioned earlier, it's interesting that that setting was on the T39/R520/etc, but not the T610/Z600/etc. Perhaps SMS via GPRS was an up-and-coming technology which fell by the wayside?

Anyway, on the subject of billing, I have also had issues with Vodafone. A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that I was being charged for all of my text messages even though I am supposed to get 20 free every month. When I phoned customer service to query this, the CSR admitted that they had been charging me for all of my text messages since November, so she offered me a $20 credit on my account to compensate. They also failed to charge me for my GPRS usage last month, and I'm hoping that they make the same error again this month as I have used GPRS quite a lot. :)

kiwisteve, johnr is correct. If the Calling Party receives a message of connect, depending on call category (not billed, not emergency, etc) then the calling network will start the clock.

Mind you if the call is answered by the voice mail on the other side it's deemed as connected ok, even if you put the phone on hook while the message is played.
