I'm currently using a t68i and a Ipaq 5450 to use GPRS in the UK. I have tried to ask in the mobile phone shops how i coudl use the internet on my ipaq over bluetooth but the staff all seem to be unsure what i mean and normally just show me a video of a football goal instead.

Does anybody here know how to do this? Or if it is even possible.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Tom

Yes, it's possible. It's pretty much like doing it from your notebook (have a look on the other thread about this.

Make sure the GPRS configuration on your T68i is correct.

On your H5450 you'll bond the devices, and go to Settings | Connections. Update the work connection adding a new number to dial. The number will be something like *99# or similar, ask your operator what is their standard.

Make sure you configure the dial properties to dial only the number, not area code or country code.

Then set all the connections in the Settings | Connections to Work, Work, Work.

Try now, and make sure you enter the SPB GPRS Competition in our forums to get a cool software to monitor your GPRS usage!

Thanks Mauricio,

Unfortunatley i was not very clear about the actual question i was asking. Ooops

What i meant to ask was...

If i boulght a 3g phone (which don't support GPRS in the uk) how would i use the 3g service with its promise of high bandwidth and lower costs in the way that i use gprs at the moment.

I made the trek up to the 3G shop in Central London and asked them.

After the 1st person there denied that such a thing could ever exist and why would i not want to look at their own proprietry content.

However the 2nd person was much more helpful. They will be releasing a data package which will be called 'data connect'. They said details would be available on their website www.three.co.uk , but i haven't found it yet.

They hoped to have this available within 3-6 months, but have not yet decided on pricing. However they did say that they would comtinue there policy of making the pricing as competitive as possible and easy to manage.
Most importantly they did not rule out the possibility of a flat rate unlimeted data package at high speeds of 128-340 kbps.

Sound promising!

Anyone else heard anything? What would you do with that portable bandwidth?

Ah, now the question is clear. But I'm sorry I don't know this yet... But it seems you have some good info, care to feed us more when you have more answers?

Hi there,

I might be able to shed a little more light for you :-)

Linking you 3G handset to your laptop/pda will become available, and the 3G handset will probably just give your PC/PDA an IP address (not one that you will be able to see from other internet connected systems mind, just a sort of virtual IP as the RAN isn't IP based) .. just don't hold your breath for it :-)

As to what you can do with that bandwidth ... I'd bet that to start with you won't get access to the internet, just to 3's local content like the phone has.

Regards

Mark

I've used a couple of 3G 'phones connected to the network via a PDA or PC. You can either connect via Bluetooth to the PDA/PC or via a cable, which dials up to the network using the GPRS access code *99***#. This is essentially PPP and your client (PDA/PC) gets an IP address assigned. You're then able to access the data services.

The *99# code is for GPRS access. AFAIK the 3G mobile phones available are pretty bad in connections - the only bluetooth enabled 3G mobile phone on 3 (UK and Australia) has only headset profile, not DUN. Also the latest and greatest of theirs don't even have Bluetooth and only run signed application (the Motorola Symbian UIQ A920).

The Z1010 supports DUN (modem) and is compatible with both PC and Mac! Not to mention it can sync and has a battery that lasts up to 5 days!

Yep, the Z1010 supports DUN, but when I wrote the reply it wasn't available on 3 UK. It's avaialble from Vodafone though, and I had one for review on Geekzone a few months back.
