anyone using the GPS on a telecom HTC Falcon? What software are people using? Anyone know of any compatible navigation programs with NZ maps/data - in particular wellington?

i read the review on this site (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=1640) and there's some mussings that GPS locations may be sent back to the telco - anyone know if this true? possible? actaully happening??

Not happening. Telecom would have to invest a few million dollars to have the required infrastrucutre for this to work. Unofficialy this is not a happening thing for a while.

i coudlnt' find anywhere to configure the GPS -> maybe i didnt' look hard enough.
soundsl ike a bit of a privacy issue, unless you have some control over it's operation.

some mapping software would be nice.
i'm gonna see if i can get APRS working on it.

It's a network based GPS, and it's not available for programs in your Pocket PC. It may report back to the towers but as I said TNZ decided not to implement anything on this. I've asked them specifically about using Microsoft MapPoint Location Server, but it's not an option without network infrastructure to support it.

It sems it will not be active in New Zealand, at least for the near future.

Why is that? What feature you don't like? Network, form factor, OS? Come on, let us know...

The built in GPS is primarily to comply with the E911 service in the USA which requires 911 operators to be able to locate the position of a phone when a 911 call is made.

:-(
it's unusual they actaully made a good product instead of just patenting it and refusing to innovate

There is plenty of stuff on the E911 service on the net, a quick search on google will show you plenty of stuff to look at. There were 2 phases to the process, Phase 1 E911 is simply offering ALI/ANI information, both from PSTN and mobile phones, and Phase 2 E911 is location based services for mobile phones.

There is a technical background I found of the FCC website

The GPS Feature, is call AGPS (Assited GPS) This works by using the GPS network and the CellSite to work out your location , to allow Network location based services. At this stage Telecom does not support this feature on their network
