I have just purchased a new phone on contract with telecom its a Samsung sch-w531. This package included a usb cable which is meant to work but isn't. I am annoyed because im trying to upload music to my mp3 player on my phone using the usb cable. When i connect the usb cable to my pc it somes up saying i have to search for software to be able to uplaod music, when i search for software it then comes up saying no software can be found...WHAT AM I MEANT TO DO NOW? my sister has exactly the same phone on the same contract and her cable works so why isnt mine

Im paying big bucks for this phone and im already annoyed with the telecom network for selling me a DUD!!!

Are you using it on the same PC as your sister?
What happens if you use your sisters cable?
Did you think it could possibly be a configuration issue, and not a dud product?

Does the phone come with a CD, and if so have you installed the software before plugging the cable, as standard for USB connection?

Before you go off and flame Telecom, have you read the manual on how to connect the USB cable to transfer files? Or perhaps contacted Telecom (on their 0800 number, 0800 400909 opt 3)? Both options can provide clarification on how you are supposed to connect the phone, and if done correctly - I think you'll find that the phone works fine.

Before connecting, you need to put the phone in file transfer mode.

You can do this by memory by going to Menu -> Tools - File management? (or is it PC connectivity?, can't remember) -> Connect PC.
Plug in USB cable.

Device should appear as a USB flash drive assuming that you are running Windows 2000 or higher.

Open it up, copy the MP3's into the Media folder.

That aside I have personally used multiple W531's to connect to computers running Windows XP many times without issue, providing you have it in the flash drive mode.

I think you have hit the nail on the head, I have had several people experiance the same problem thinking they needed software however it was always failing to read the manual and place the phone into pc mode

From memory, if you connect it directly without first putting it in file transfer mode - you can set up the W531 as a modem, however you will need the drivers as they aren't included with windows (the driver prompt will come up) which is probably what was happening in this case.

Edit: While its in file transfer mode - you won't be able to get calls. Incoming calls will be diverted to voicemail, messsage service, or to the 'if unreachable' divert number.

Menu -- Tools -- User memory -- Connect PC. I am going to assume that if your sister can do it on her phone then surely you did ask her how it was done? If you are following these instructions then trouble shoot the cable by swapping with her or trying it on another computer but I am sure the advice given will correct the problem. One thing I didnt like about the phone (I have since sold it on now) was that when you send a text and close the phone immediately the text wont go while it is closed. You have to wait until it has confirmed sent before closing, very annoying. This might have been fixed on later models. It wasnt my primary phone so I didnt spend too much time trying to see if there was a patch or fix.
