Telecom have just announced that they will be rolling out CDMA EVDO in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch before the end of the year.

EVDO offers peak speeds of 2.4Mbps with an expected average of 500-600kbps. The service will be called T3G.

Compare this to Vodafone UMTS 3G which offers a peak of only 384kbps and an average of 150kbps!!!

EVDO is a true broadband mobile service! Telecom are innovative - Vodafone play catch up!

This is really great news. Sprint has just announced their plans to roll out EV-DO in the US as well.

Great.. 2.4mbps at $5 per MB for traffic.. Yeah right!

Isn't it funny how Woosh buddied up to Telecom to avoid unbundling and now telecom have thanked them killing their entire business. Telecom now have the ability to offer a true wireless data network and if they're got the brains they will introduce decent data caps and rates to push the service.

Johnr

You are correct that people don't need this speed for the services you mentioned but thats not what its about. You miss the point that a huge amount of revenue for mobile operators is derived from corporate or enterprise customers who do have a need for reliable and fast remote access. Also high network speeds and lower latencys open up a world of opportunities for consumers with new media rich services such as streaming video or live TV. Whether people actually want these types of services remains to be seen. So, EVDO is more aimed at the remote worker than your average person who justs sends text or pictures.

Remember before ADSL everyone thought the maximum speed you could get down copper was 56kbps.....

Johnr may have a bit of a bee in his bonnet as Voda (who I think he works for) are rolling out something that was great when first announced but is now looking pretty shabby

Yup great news, I was just talking about this to a collegue of mine skyplonk a few months ago. Since Telecom is working with Sprint (aligning networks) they should roll out EV-DO and get the jump on voda. Also good for leverage on the buying power of Sprint for phones...

well just for the sake of clarity, johnr does seem to work for vodafone, admitted

I would like to disagree with you in the area of "but people don't need this type of speed to talk to one another or send text message or PXT" the area of Corporate data and a mobile work force is paramount for cost savings and efficent workforce.

This is essential particularly in rural areas where long distance are travel by staff and the need to remain in touch without having to come back to a PC to read emails etc.

Cheers

Does seem to be some sour grapes in this thread .
VF were touting 'speed' , when they announced 3G - now it's not important when TNZ may get the jump on them.

Personally I believe latency is critical as more business users move to thin client / citrix applications. Have seen some reviews based on Verizon testing where ev-do latency was around 200ms. 1x definitely perform better than GPRS in this regard at about 500ms vs 1sec at best.

Anyone seen any info on what wcdma will give ?

Absolutely, latency is very important. Expect Telecom EVDO to be less than 200ms. Who knows what UMTS will be....
