While browsing TradeMe for my son’s  Christmas present, I came across the following listing.http://www.trademe.co.nz/Mobile-phones/Vodafone-network/Prepay-sim-cards/auction-130614078.htm This describes a SIM card for an operator offering 500 minutes that can be used to call a number of countries including NZ. The listing further states you can get a regular NZ landline-type number as well as a 021 number, but if you want to port your existing 021 number to this service, you must pay $300. A deposit is also required when signing up for the service. I did a bit of Googling and can’t turn up any other references to this. Of concern is that the listing makes no mention of the name of the company providing the service. Does anyone have any further info?

If it’s too good to be true, then it probably is.

I sent the following question via TradeMe.

Hi, what is the name of the company offering this service, and is there a website I can visit for more info?

How does roaming overseas work with this SIM?

SELLER'S ANSWER:

Hi, the company called " Telnet Telecommunication ltd",at this moment we don't have English Website, but will come in 2 month. If you need more infos, I can e-mail you some details. Please let me know your roaming destination, then I can tell you more. And I am very sure the charge will be much cheaper than normal charge.

Anyone know anything about this company?

Sounds like a slight dodgy setup with free calling between their sim cards, being routed off to VoIP. $200 deposit, while they are paying ~1c per minute, and I bet they cut you off so quick if you exceed the preset limits.

I dont see anything magical here, and I bet it wont be around for long (and neither will your $200).

Q I note you supply a Nokia phone? If I want to put the SIM card into the phone I already have, will all the features still work?
A Yes. This SIM card suit for any kind of Cell phone. The free Nokia is just our promotion. Cheers 11:55 am, Thu 6 Dec

Q The $200 deposit? Is that a setup fee or does the money go towards your Monthly Fees?
A Becase this is not prepay plan, we ask for $200 just for finance security. And we will return it to you after first 12 months contract if you quit the plan. 12:00 pm, Thu 6 Dec
