I've just successfully sent a MMS with SwirlyMMS (available via Installer/AppTapp) on a 1.1.3 firmware. After installing it I had to do:

cd /Applications
chmod +s
chown root:wheel

to get it to actually load.

In the System-->General-->Network-->EDGE Settings I've got the APN as "" and the username/password fields empty.

In SwirlyMMS I've got:

Username & Password are blank

I even managed to send it to a Telecom cellphone.

You may or may not need to turn WiFi off beforehand. I use "BossPrefs" to turn "Edge" and Wifi on & off as it's quick.

Now we just wait for SwirlyMMS v3.0 which adds receiving capability.

No, you don't need to turn WiFi off beforehand. it sorts it out itself, but if you exit SwirlyMMS before the little "m" is lit up green, then it doesn't seem to re-enable WiFi once you exist the app, requiring it to be turned back on again manually.

Changing the ownership to root:wheel also seems to be unnecessary (the default root:admin appears to work fine), the +s to suid the main binary appears to be the essential bit to allow it to presumably turn the Wifi/Edge/GPRS radio(s) on/off. Group ownership of the preferences are set to "wheel" though so it probably doesn't hurt to set the binary permissions to root:wheel, YMMV.

If you need to know your IP address for your phone to log into it then you can either check your routers DNS/DHCP log, or you can use the Term-vt100 terminal app and run "ifconfig" and note the 2nd inet IP address. You can also just use this Term-vt100 app to make the permissions changes rather than bothering with a remote connection.

Login for terminal and SSH/SFTP is "alpine" by default on the current versions of OpenSSH for the iPhone.

Hi Steve

I recently got an iphone and have installed a few applications including SWIRLYMMS

The application opened fine at first and I followed your set up instructions accept for this part which I dont understand that says:

cd /Applications
chmod +s
chown root:wheel

Now I am unable to get the application 'SWIRLYMMS' to load/open. It starts loading then closes, -just like the other ones I recently installed, 'SMSD' and 'CallD' which I cant get to open either.

Im not much of a computer geek but I can follow most instructions ok :-)

Have you any ideas what I can do to get swirlymms or any of the other applications to open?

Thanx, Andrew

SwirlyMMS creates its settings files with permissions that the firmware from 1.1.3 doesn't like, the "chmod +s" terminal command forces it to run as an administrator-level application so permissions become irrelevant.

You need to either use the term-vt100 application to enter those commands on the iphone (if using 1.1.3/1.1.4 you also need the terminal fix or it won't let you login locally) or you can use an ssh application from a computer to connect to the iPhones IP address over WiFi.

By default you need to use the loginname "root" and the password "alpine".

The terminal fix is called "SUID Lib Fix" and is available from the  installer source

Ive been messing round turning my wifi & edge on and off with no success so far.
any ideas what to try next steve?

The main repositories are being hammered at the moment, I think that might be the problem, give it a while.

Try now, looks like rebooting the phone can help. There should be an Installer update available as well which might fix some 1.1.4 issues. You'll also want to add the repository so you can put their fixes on.
