Anyone able to help me set up a T630 to give full internet with GPRS on vodafone NZ
i was previously using a Nokia 3650, and used the phone a modem for PCs and a PDA and had full internet access.

i can get to wap sites using my new SE T630's browser, but i can't get to my mail server using the email client inside the phone.
I called vodafone helpdesk, and the unhelpful person on helpdesk got really confused and kept asking which ISP i use @ home. My pop3 mailserver is a telehoused box with it's own domain name - i'm not using my isp's mail server @ all. The helpdesk person forwarded me onto someone else there who said that you have to forward all my emails to vodafone if you want to check it with a phone.. Now that's simply not true.

If i put my sim card back into my old nokia 3650 i can still uses the phone's email client check the email from my mail server.. but if i the sim card put it into the T630 it doesn't work. I've check the email settings a few dozen times, and even tried a few other pop3 servers like my work one.. the connection times out.

I've tried using the SE T630 as a connection for my Tungsten T or my desktop PC, the phone connects to GPRS with no errors, but i'm getting timeouts for every request. This works with the nokia 3650.

so, i'm a thinking there's some settings i need on this T630. I've gone through the pdf manual that comes with the phone, and spent some time trying different things, but no luck so far.

can anyone help me out with getting my new phone to access the internet.

btw: The vfone helpdesk lady also said that xtra's pop3 server has been blocked by vodafone. while that's irrelevant to my problem that sounds rather unethical

You're probably using the WAP APN. Make sure you're using "internet" or "www.vodafone.net.nz". On the T610 you should be able to create multiple CID (one for each APN you want) and on the e-mail client select which one to use on the configuration seciton.

And of course you don't have to forward any e-mail to Vodafone...

Never managed to solve any problem by calling vodafone helpdesk. I can understand that they're not highly trained there, but there seems to be confusion and mis-information coming from the 777 helpdesk so often..

I did have a play with APNs. In my nokia my APN is actually blank and incidently i've never been charged for GPRS though i do have a 2MB plan i'm using much more ;-)

i think i tried www.vodafone.net.nz already. I will again, and also try internet.

I wish 777 was a half as helpful as this forum :-)

I just tried "internet" as the APN and the error message on the phone is "GPRS parameters not supported"

what does that mean?? any idea what next?

Have you tried Wireless Vodafone? They can send the settings OTA (use the T610 settings).

OTA.. that's what it's called !! :-)

i remember this from using a Ericsson T39m. vodafone helpdesk was able to sending me something they described as a SMS, that would add a new CID to my phone.
is this the same thing?? i tried describing this to 777 but I didn't know what it was called and they didn't understand me.

i'm looking @ http://wireless.vodafone.co.nz/ now.
The email configuring option wants me to choose an ISP, which isn't what i want.

The Internet access GPRS section doesn't have the T630 listed.
Would it be wise to use the T610 option instead? or is there a good reason it's listed in other parts of that site but not there.

I've always found this page quite useful:
https://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobiles/05.1_makes_and_models.jsp

You can download PDFs with the instructions for configuring most phones to use Vodafone NZ settings. The T610 is listed, and I can't imagine the settings being different for the T630.

Somehow I feel a lot happier plugging the settings in myself than relying on an automatic OTA config. Just call me a neo-luddite :-D

Don't worry about the e-mail configuration, just enter it manually. Yes, you can use the T610 configuration on your T630.

the OTA didn't work - same results - (GPRS parameters not supported)

so, i went into a vodafone shop, and a nice guy there looked up the account and found that GPRS wasn't enabled on the account.
this doesn't make much sense because i've been using snappermail and webpro and my Tungsten for over a year and connecting with the nokia 3650.

anyways, the guy in the store enabled GPRS on the account and now it's working.
He reckoned there was a "glitch" that turned it off when the sim was put in a new phone...

it all sounds very fishy
i'm glad vodafone don't run 111.

Didn't even think of checking this, since you said you've been using GPRS for a while now. No glitch on the mobile phone would turn this off... On the other hand, I guess you'll start paying GPRS now...

I wonder why it wasn't the first thing that 777 checked.

Yeah - i'm pretty hard on 777. I would love to have my opinion changed. I've a many instances of bad service from 777 - and i've hadincredibly good service from *123. But it's not exactly a good statistical sample :-)

Fair enough on over looking the obvious.. happens to anyone.
but, would like your comment on these two
1) that i have to forward all emails to vodafone if i want to check with a phone
2) xtra pop3 servers are blocked to GPRS users

number two actually might be understandable due to telecom mobile only offering xtra mail by wap, and tying their services to a xtra login. But is it true?

Apparently, Xtra block access to their POP servers in any circumstances except when you are connected to the Internet via Xtra. It is therefore impossible to access your Xtra email account from GPRS or any other ISP. This contravenes standard industry practise and is, IMO, anti-competitive but that's a debate that we can save for a rainy day...

On the subject of customer service, I have experienced both extremes from both 777 and 123. Some staff a very helpful and some aren't but, overall, I would say that Vodafone is the better of the two.

my opinion of vodafone, is the only good thing about them is their use of GSM, which is a bigger market and more open market as well as more standardisation.

Vodafone has really treated me badly in the past and if i could get decent handsets on telecom i wouldn't be having any further contact with vodafone.

Just last week i called *123 to change voicemail settings I mentioned that sending sms is a very long a complicated process on my nokia 3105. The guy asked for my email address and this monday sent me some instructions on the fastest way to send a message. Instead of going Messages -> create message etc, he suggested pressing the down key and choosing a contact and then Send Message
it cuts out about 5 key presses.

So, my opinion of *123 is high;y elevated this week :-)

i've been very annoyed at telecom not so long ago, when it took 4 days to do an ESN switch!!! meanwhile my flatmate kept demonstrating the vodafone equivalent. (sim card in, simcard out, simcard in, sim card out )...

My experience is tha vodafone helpdesk isn't much help - but the vodafone stores are full of very knowledgable technology enthusiasts who can fix the problem.
whereas with telecom, the *123 people are wonderful, but the telecom retail stores i've tried have sales people instead of phone geeks ;) who are not able to fix problems with phone - (but they will sometimes ring *123 for you).

Probably best to use your own web hosting provider with your own domain name. I am currently using a TREO 600 on vodafone with my own mail server with no problems at all. Setup in a few minutes :)

Hi There,

I have resorted to surfing the net to try and find an answer to why I cannot access my home exchange mail server to access my email on my T630. Just like you I have made several unsuccessful calls to '777' and speak with people that just go silent when they encounter a problem that isn't in their training manul or not on the vodafone faq section of the company web site.

I am at my wits end, then I came across your post and am praying you have found the answer and wouldnt mind sharing it with me?

My problem is this.. I have put all my settings into the phone for the email section and the data account I am using is the " VF Internet/gateway account". When I select "send and recieve) I get this:

1. Finding server
2. Connecting
3. GPRS parameters not supported
4. Cannot connect to server

I have also tried replacing the data account with the VF Live data account, but this just results in the "Finding Server" message staying on the screen for ages, then finally saying server not found.

We have a Nokia 7210 which I popped the same sim card in and it worked fine straight away on the nokia.
From what I have found the difference in the two data accounts are:
VF gateway APN is www.vodafone.net.nz
VF LIve APN is live.vodafone.net.nz

I used to have a T610 which I had working fine, but alas that took a trip through the washing machine and hence the arrival of the T630.

If you can help in anyway I would be most grateful.

Kind Regards,

Craig Coveney.
