I tried doing a search on this but couldn't come up with anything so I apologise if it has been discussed before, but out of curiosity what are going to be the benefits of the 900MHz network?

If one has a handset capable of working on this frequency and assuming you're connected to one of the upgraded towers, how would you know it's using the 900MHz and not the 2100MHz?

You can't tell but it doesn't matter, whether it is 900 or 2100 you won't notice the difference.

The advantage of it is the 900 has a greater range hence its deployment in more rural areas.

Coverage foot print for a umts900 cell is 2 to 4 times bigger than umts2100 depending on setup.
