Biennial review of mobile networks, plans and phones in our household.

I'm just curious about what other households do. Do you have both phones on the same network, or different networks? I was thinking it would be a good idea to split the networks on the basis that if one network is down, you still have one phone that may work. Disaster preparedness and all that.

But on the other hand, if it is a disaster, and the only person you want to call is your spouse, you're stuffed if either network is down. Whereas if you're both on the same network, it's 50-50 you might be able to call.

We're not heavy enough users (and the kids aren't old enough) to justify the family share plans. Between Vodafone Flex prepay and Skinny Direct, there are good prepaid plans that would suit both our calling and mobile data habits.

Given the 3 main players offer share plans it is more cost effective to stick to one carrier and pay the extra $20-25 to have additional mobiles as "shares"

My wife and I both maintain contract-connected phones on one network, and have 'spare' phones on another, maintained on prepay connections.[1]

Carrier diversity and a reasonable expectation that we should be able to talk to eachother, even if inter-network stuff is borked.

Of course, to be truly useful that means you have to carry two phones everywhere. You win some, you lose some?

- BJ.

[1] both of mine are on Spark at present, i'm waiting for my prepay credit to dwindle before moving my spare phone back to Vodafone. Wound up like this when I changed employers, which meant a carrier-change...

We used to have a mixed offering on purpose, this was quite good when travelling in places with patchy coverage in the South Island meant you had the best of both worlds except as you said you were trying to contact each other. We are now both on spark because I now have a work mobile. And it happened to be spark and probably not worth changing as spark seems to normally have the better coverage anyways especially in the south

Ironically I was on SH8 in Central Otago a week or two ago, and only Vodafone would get us out to call 111 when we came across a head-on smash....

Everyone in my family is on Spark / Skinny due to coverage out at my parents house. There is no Vodafone / 2degrees coverage where they're based.

Due to my location, Vodafone & 2degrees (roamed onto vf network) are the picks.

one family member has 2d due to best deal offered at the time.

Another family member has a spark mobile, work phone so no selection there.

I personally have both a spark and VF sim, useful for those tight situations.

@michaelmurfy are you sure now? Vodafone turned on a new site next to Spark site before Christmas

Second sim! Duh. I should have thought of that. Maybe even a rebooted Nokia 3310 for the survival kit.

Though having the VF sims as the backups means that the "main" sim has to be spark / skinny.

Have you considered simply switching a dual-SIM phone? That way you only need to carry/charge one phone and you'll be able to reach each other even if one of the networks is down.

I use both Spark and 2degrees on my OnePlus 3 and can receive calls and texts on both numbers. I've got it set up so that:

- If my primary network (Spark) isn't available, then all incoming calls to my Spark number get diverted to my 2degrees number.
- When I encounter dead-zones during my daily commute, I switch my data to 2degrees so that my Spotify / Ingress session doesn't get interrupted. :)

I still have a goodly number of older model phones so I got curious. Can't find any confirmed window for shutdown.

There'll be a run on el-cheapo 3G+ devices when they finally do announce.

Used to do diverse networks, moved both to Skinny because they're significantly cheaper. Have a 2D SIM in the alarm I could grab if required.

I'm on spark, wife's phone is now on skinny (significantly cheaper than the plan she was on, with no reduction in usage), plus we have a 2D phone (cheap candy bar phone) that travels with us as an emergency in case of no signal from spark, or I take with me in places where if it gets broken I'm not going to be upset.
