Telecom have done a similar plan to Vodafone with some cherries on the top. And being on Onebill, means it's flexible and not structured unlike the on-account $40 offering from the competition.

*Update 01 11 2004, Looks like PER Second rounding after the first minute now! :-))

Telecom's is best as onebill,
Vodafones is best as Pre Pay (I don't like the "free" minutes plans as they structure your calling patterns for you then sting you a higher rate when the included minutes are used up. , WHY?)

These plans are fantastic and have allowed the disposal of the business plan. I'm sumply carrying two small phones. (027 6225 and 021 3120) and paying what is a fantastic peak rate, I just choose the phone and call away. I have dumped my business plan now.. one bonus on Telecom is the onebill without having to fork out $40 minimum per month. Of course this also comes with $10 TXT/$10 MegaTXT

The prices are as follows,

Telecom landlines for 49c per minute anytime.
All Landlines are included.

Calls to TELECOM mobiles are 49c per minute. 025/027
Includes all 027/025 mobiles,
Onebill, per second charging after the first minute :-)
Prepaid, rounded up to the next minute charging block :-(

Calls to the "top 5" international destination are 49c per minute US CANADA UK IRELAND AUSTRALIA (or just use a yabba card from your 027/025 at 13c per minute)

Calls to 083210/#00 are 20c per CALL (Voicemail)

Calls to 018 are 50c per call, you may request up to 2 numbers.

021/029/023 and other international countries are are $1.39

There are some differences......

Telecoms' plans Prepaid plans (all)
Minimum call charge is one minute. On prepaid, After the first minute calls are rounded UP TO THE NEAREST MINUTE. This is not the case on onebill where per second charging applies after first minute.
A peak time 021 call for 1:01 will cost $2.78

Vodafone's Pre Pay plans (all)
Minimum call charge is one minute. After the first minute calls are rounded TO THE NEAREST SECOND
A peak time 027 call for 1:01 will cost $1.41 quite a bit cheaper.

Go Onebill is just what the doctor ordered. no structured charging, no minimum fee, $10 TXT, Per second after first minute charging

TXT
$10 TXT is a great deal, Vodafone still have not learnt that this is chewing away their total cash cow, SMS.
Just hope not to make any calls or those prepaid cards will be swallowed faster than if you were paying 20c per TXT. That 1:04 021 call just cost you 7 TXT's more than it would have on Vodafone calling an 027!

WAP (Meaning non VLIVE! or XTRA portal charges)
10c per 10KB of data on Vodafone's GRPS and it get's only cheaper with data plans!
50c* per 10KB of data on 027 1RXTT (4 times more!)

Actual DATA, much Cheaper on Telecom. Check the websites.
(Why is 027 WAP so expensive! Argh)

My opinion is that Telecoms "xtra" home is better than Vodafones LIVE portal.
it's simpler, much better laid out and not such a mess. The best part is it's not charging you if you just take a browse and see what it has to offer.

*Telecom have a "free browse" model. it's free to browse things on the XTRA menu like news headlines, Ringtones, Games, Email subjects. The Ringtones/games pricings are good as that's all you pay. The charges to Read a news story, weather report, Email at 35c a pop is rather high if you want to read a few but ideal for very occasional usage.. Watch out when you go off site, It'll cost ya dearly.

*Vodafone have recently adopted the same system. Free to browse. and I'm finally using it, Just a flying shame that many LIVE! capable phones are barred (Qtek, Nokia 3120) and it isn't working half the time :-( and also Bl00dy BACK function does not work manking it quite annoying to navigate unlike other WAP sites where you can just hit "back"

For Vodafone users:
Ringtones: www.tagtag.com
NEWS: wap.nzherald.co.nz
GOOGLE WAP: wap.google.com
EMAIL:Vodafones own great Email service with a poorly done and buggy but cheap to use WAP client off Vodafone live (the old .net WAPMAIL was much much better, Vodafone?) (Currently FREE! to use Wapmail!!!)

Of course these small price differences while would make almost no difference to average jo Bloggs on hos Boost phone, Operating a company and reducing cost is crucial when it stems to like 20-30 phones using wap constantly!

Did we mention using "Yabba" for 99c per min to another mobile, peak or off peak?
80c to a landline?
13c to aust,uk,us,canada, Why pay 49c on mates rates is this is all you are changing for!
0124 is free from your 027/025 mobile.

Wow. That is great.
But really, no one I know who has a prepaid phone, on either carrier does much, if any voice calls with their phone. I am sure that people do, and I am not saying that they do not. But both deals above are far better than what was offered before. It would not be a deal to make me run out and change carriers for Vodafone to telecom for vice versa.

The only change I would make to the Telecom deal, would be the one second rounding...

Cheers

Correct, charged a little different to Vodafone

5c per 1KB of data, Rounded to nearest 1KB instead of 10KB but still works out a lot more in the long run as WAP is hardly telemetry, you "browse"

I browsed the NZherald WAP site today on my 021 and read 12 news stories for 30c (26KB)
It would have cost me $1.30 on 027.

From the Xtra site:
All content outside the Xtra WAP menu will cost 5c per KB. x 10KB = 50c.

Most people don't realize this trap and the full minutes, They are drawn in by $10 TXT but watch the pre-pay cards get swallowed up each time they call.

Skyplonk - For me personally, the new deals are not better than the existing Prepaid plans because under Mates Rates, offpeak calling to 021 is $1.39pm. Under the existing prepaid plans, the same call would cost $0.49pm or $0.89pm.

I assume that the same applies to calls to 027 on Motormouth.

hmmm... well I guess you can not please everyone. The old Prepaid plans are still out there I think. I still think it is a step in the right direction for both company’s.

The old prepaid plans are still out there on telecom and the idea would be that if you own an 027 and you ring vodas then dont change to mates rates. As with owning a voda and ringing telecom mobiles. These plans are designed for people that ring within the network they belong to.

Paradoxsm,
U forget to mention one important thing with the WAP charges - telecom do not charge you from the instant you connect via WAP. You can browse through the custom WAP menu for hours reading news headlines, reading the subject headers of your xtra email, check out what ringtones are available to be downloaded etc and you will NOT be charged a cent, if I did that on Vodafone I would be charged for every single link I follow and every bit that gets downloaded from the WAP server.
On telecom unless you browse outside the main menu you will not be charged unless you click on a link with a * next to it or use one of the premium services such as downloading ringtones or games, if you use these telecom will let you know how much it costs before you commit to spending anything. No such courtesy on vodafone, one question I also have about vodafone, if you pay for a ringtone via WAP and download it via WAP, will you be charged for both the ringtone and the KB usage?
So much for you 4 times cheaper - it depends on how you use it

Telecoms WAP portal is much better than Vodafones dumb LIVE platform.
Vodafones WAP pricing for "off sites" is much much better than Telecoms at present which is totally prohibitive.

I have been meaning to amed this now I bought a 6225. I'll do this now.

I just been speaking with a rep from Telecom Mobile.

She informs me that the 49c landline rate DOES apply to TelstraClear Landlines also.

Telecom's marketing material is a bit ambiguous as to whether 49c calling applies to non-Telecom landlines. Do you guys know from experience that this is indeed the case?

If there's a shadow of doubt, then I'm happy to conduct an experiment to find out once and for all.

no doubt. i just re-read an internal document, and it specifies the cheap rate is to landlines, and Telecom mobiles.
