Who remembers the time little stickers with a 'gold printed circuit' were touted as being range extenders/boosters for mobile phones?  Turned out to be more useless than a dunny roll wrapped in tin foil undecided

I now see they are promoting external antenna for phones that plug into the ear-phone socket … THIS sort of thing.

Has anyone tested or used such a thing?  Is using the ear-phone socket gonna work?  For $4 I might try it surprised

The reviews on that site don't seem encouraging. I suspect the couple of positives are probably placebo effect.
But as you say - only $4...

Yeah, all reviews I've found say it is OK for FM radio only …. but of course the sellers claim enhanced GPS and mobile too.

I see that a lot of 'passive repeaters' are also being touted as signal boosters … anyone experienced these?

Passive repeaters? Sounds like the NZ mainstream media.
