With the iPhone 3G release imminent I have found it difficult to secure the 3G. So i decided start looking around at alternatives. I quickly found the Blackberry.

WHen i did a side by side comparison for phone/email/internet features the blackberry came out far better than i thought it would!

As an example i was planning on going for mobile.me to so get push email working but things like this work as standard on the Blackberry. I am really starting to lean towards the blackberry, so i was wondering if anyone around here could chime in and offer some input on the blackberry?

For the first time i really am seeing the blackberry as a contender i feel in the past it was aimed more at the business user but maybe its starting to make thet ranstion into consumer level????

Blackberry is great, unless you wait for the Bold later in the year though it isn't 3G so anything more than email will be slower.

The biggest thing about iPhone is the App Store, in the next six months you'll quickly see iPhone overtake Blackberry, Windows Mobile and Symbian as the mobile development platform of choice. And for the first time mobile apps will be totally consumer focused.

You should probably look at Symbian phones, much more bang for your buck, in addition to being as good (if not better than) the Blackberries for business applications.

The biggest thing about iPhone is the App Store, in the next six months you'll quickly see iPhone overtake Blackberry, Windows Mobile and Symbian as the mobile development platform of choice. And for the first time mobile apps will be totally consumer focused.

? Doubtful. No doubt it will see massive development disproportionate to its user base, but to say it'll overtake Symbian, whose user base and sales vastly outstrips the iPhone (and will continue to do so for some time yet) is probably a rash overstatement.

hmm..overtake??? Probably iPhone will be another platform in which these balckberry,WM and Symbian developers will code.

iphone: Blackberry is great, unless you wait for the Bold later in the year though it isn't 3G so anything more than email will be slower.

If you opt for a Worldmode CDMA blackberry, you'll get the benefits of superior CDMA 1X/EVDO speeds and coverage. Plus when you're roaming, you'll be able to roam on all your gsm networks.

Roaming is more affordable as well.

I Have a freind with a new blackberry (curve I think).
He reported that the blackberry e-mail sometimes comes a day late. I.e it does not get to his phone till the day after it was sent.

I prefer Windows Mobile. just upgraded to a cooked 6.1 ROM and love it. The only attraction the iphone has is a big clear screen.

The Iphone, blackberry and Symbian will always be way behind in software. It is a limited market and people have been making WM software for years and intergration with PC versions will be easier. Check out Handango. The Iphone apps store - Steve jobs will have his hand out (thats not a free market).

The Iphone lacks
front camera - for video calls
Cut and paste ability - between apps
UTMS - for poor coverage areas
real keyboard - i mainly use on screen anyway
Stereo Bluethooth - no wireless music.

In saying all that, I will get one for my wife.

I use and love my HTC TYTN II, I had to buy it from overseas for about $1400 a year or so ago. THe HTC Diamond looks good if you want the latest model. I use it for business.

BlackBerry's answer to the iPhone is none of the current models or the Bold. Its call the Thunder, just google it.

Yeah the Thunder is hot, Vodafone / Verizon exclusive though which kind of sucks and it will only be 2100mhz UMTS

The bold IS 3g http://www.blackberry.com/blackberrybold/ so will be a great option going forward and will work on Telecoms new network soon and when they finally take the 850 UMTS plunge somewhere in the future.

And yes right now the Blackberry 8830 has the fastest web and download ability on CDMA 1xEVDO. Goes great and is GSM/GPRS 900/1800 capable as well.

Not bad but the Bold is a nicer phone by the looks.

OK here is an update on my previous post.
I bought my wife an Iphone - used my business account, I upgraded to the $130 a month account and the phone cost $550. My wife had it 3 days, didn't like it, so we put it on trade me and sold it for $875.

The thing can't even do pxt messages.

We are now going to get the HTC Diamond. The only thing is that it is not through vodafone, so there is no subsity on the price. But we have got a subsity by buying and selling the iphone.

The right phone is a personal thing, but I really like Windows mobile phones. I think HTC make goos gear. I had an Imate PDA2K (made by HTC) for 2 years, dropped it lots of times and it just kept going. I have just spent time customising my TYTN II and it kind of like getting a new phone. the XDA-developers forum is great for ideas to make the phone do what ever you want.

I would reccomend checking out the Diamond. Not only for what it can do out of the box, but for the potential it has beyond that.

Hmm the touch pro is not too much longer if you want to wait I don't think I can live without the keypad/board.

I have a keyboard on my TYTN II and hardly use it. I like the qwerty soft keyboard on the diamond (i have it on my TYTN II) it allows you to select numbers and characters by holding the "key" down for a little longer than normal, without having to change keyboard view.

I use mine for taking notes while doing site visits, measurements etc, it's a bit awkward with the keyboard open and holding laser measurer etc. You can be pretty quick with a stylus and a soft keypad after a little while.

It's all person preference. you can only really evaluate what works for you once you get past your perceptions and use things. It's always strange to try new things.

I was a "crackberry" addict for two years and just swapped it out for a 3G iPhone. Sure the iPhone it doesn't have as many features but I don't really miss walking past the phone and seeing that flashing new message red light. I feel a sense of freedom now as I can check emails when I feel like it rather than being compelled to do so!

Thats so true, i have an 8830 and a Curve (well the curve isnt live, waiting for Telecoms GSM) and i am forever answering emails, its good and bad all at once but i love it all the same
