Does anybody run msn messenger from the smartphone or pocket PC? I am looking at buying a smartphone that has built-in msn messenger and I intend to stay online 24/7. Would somebody be able to tell me how much data usage I am looking at by doing this?

many thanks :)

I run MSN Messenger on my Smartphone from time to time - I don't keep it always active because most of the time I'm in front of my computer. GPRS usage is not high, but remember all Smartphones are Class B devices: if a call comes in, it will disconnect the GPRS stream, meaning that you have to manually connect MSN Messenger after the call is finished.

When you say "GPRS usage is not high" what would be your monthly usage?

On my Smartphone I use the 15MB plan and don't go over the limit, checking e-mails every 30 minutes, and using MSN now and then. Mainly e-mails, no Internet browsing (I use wireless LAN for this).

MSN is minimal. I have found about 10KB for 10-20 chat send/reply sessions. About 20kb or so to actually connect up.

With email, if you only get a low volume, Think about setting up TXT email alerts on the Vodafone email option. it costs 20c per message recieved but could be cheaper than connecting up reguarly to find you don't even have a message. I am within my data 1 account always now. I used to use 10+ MB with reguarly checking. I find this very useful.

it TXT's you to let you know you have a message and you simply connect if it's urgent.

if you don't use Vodafones email, still set it up and forward your messages from your existing email account to the vodafone one so you still get the alerts. (forward and keep copy)

I would add that I found using MSN Messenger on a phone too cumbersome. It took too long to compose replies - and I'm not that slow....

Your mileage may vary.

Darryl,

I have must say that the Qwerty keyboard on the TREO 600 is a god send for Text messages and chat. For text messages it stores text messages as a thread for each contact - superb !!

I have a Pocket PC Phone now - and that ROCKS for SMS.

Thanks for the tip though!

For messaging, Agile Messenger is well worth a try... (and best of all, it's FREE!). I've never seen it used on a mobile phone (maybe someone can post their feedback?)but i've tried it on my Pocket PC and it works like a ChArM (as long as the Yahoo server is up and running properly).

Messaging: MSN, AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, QQ, and Wireless Village

Slightly off the original topic but is there anybody out there who has got cMessenger or any other ICQ chat programs to work on an SE T610? The software does support the phone and I have read various instructions on setting it up but simply cannot get it to work on Vodafone.
Any help would be appreciated!!

sbiddle, you're probably connecting to the NAT network. You have to use the "internet" APN and try to get a non-NAT address, for start. Please open another thread if this discussion needs to extend...
