I'm not sure whether this will work but im wondering whether its possible to dial the 087303030 (FREE!!) number for Xtra and connect to my Flat Rate plan while away from home through my laptop.

Would be much cheaper than GPRS (almost free considering i already have a flat rate account).

Just dial it yourself and see if there's a modem answer. I think it won't work: I have the suspicion calls from mobile networks to these 086 and 087 numbers are blocked by the exchanges.

I just tried it, once it said that the server didn't respond.

The second time it connected :D

I disconnected incase its costing. Am i right in thinking that it would be free?

Since it's a data call it's charged at Vodafones CSD data rates which are listed on there website. Data calls DO NOT use any included minutes.

Some 0867 and 0873 numbers are accessible from a mobile, some are not. It all depends how they are set up. Connecting to the net at 9600 would be an absolute crawl these days unless you want it just for email in which case GPRS would be cheaper than CSD.

***it WONT BE FREE***

It will cost you your applicable per minute rate or a mobile data rate, I'm unsure of what charge but I can tell you it will NOT BE FREE. (until 2001 xtra was usable on an 0800 number which they canned)

The 087303030 number probably won't work. You will most likely need to call a special number denominator which is 087654 then drop the "0" and key in the rest of the IN number, 87 or 867

eg 08765487303030.

If you want to check the xtra email, either use thie method & dial-up and POP the server or use "xtramail" to forward your emails to a "real" provider, like username@Vodafone.net.nz and collect using GPRS which will probably be cheaper.

Data on a digital network works completely to data on an analogue network. With your landline for example (and an analogue mobile) your modem is actually making the connection to the remote modem. In a GSM network you are transferring the data from your PC across the mobile network in a digital format and (describing it in a very simplified form)Vodafone's network actually dials out and completes the call for you. Your phone isn't actually acting as a modem - it merely connects to the GSM network itself.

So an analogue mobile could dial in for free or not?

If you were on Telecom 025 analogue and had a modem for your phone you could get a plan and use the included minutes to access the internet. Usual conditons apply like analogue data being slow, you might get 14.4k if you are very lucky but more than likey you'll only get 9600 max. What I am unsure of is how Telecom charge 027 CSD data calls, I believe they may charge them the same as voice calls (unlike Vodafone who differentiate the charges) so you may be able to do the same thing with an 027 phone and data card.
