Right-o. Im a n00b here (lucky me) and I just got my hands on a Nokia N-Gage QD.
I had a Nokia N-Gage before this (the previous model) and had all my GPRS settings set up for vodafone and that all worked fine.
Now I get a phone from Hong Kong (at least thats where I think it came from), try to add all of the same GPRS settings again, and no luck. It just dosnt want to connect. My girlfriend had the same problem with another phone she got from Asia somewhere. GPRS just wouldnt work for her even though she had all the same settings as another similar phone.

Is there anyway at all I can get around this as I really like this phone and dont want to sell it, but if I cant get the GPRS to work then there really isnt much point in me having it (not being able to recieve PXT msgs or play games and stuff online.)

Any ideas?

Cheers

EASY way, Ring vodafone and get them to sms the settings to your phone for MMS and GPRS.

hard way, do it yourself. Remember vodafone have 3 APNs', live, .net, MMS

You can also visit Wireless Vodafone and send the configuration via SMS yourself.

Ok Ok... Ive tried all the auto configurators, done all that. Done everything manually... and still no luck...

All I need to know is if there IS a problem using some overseas phones on our GPRS system here, or if anyone knows anyone thats had problems with it. Because as far as I know most people have no problems with things like this, but there seem to be a few stories floating round that seem to suggest this...

Also Vodafone dont have settings for the Nokia N-Gage as the phone isnt even sold in this country...

I really dont think I'm going to have much luck getting this to work... but I would still like to hear some more suggestions, or if anyone actually has ANY knowledge in this matter PLEASE LET ME KNO!

Cheers!

There is some issues with uding overeseas phone in NZ especially ones from "other networks" like Verizon or AT&T if the phone is customised like our own LIVE! phones currently are.

Vodafone NZ have 3 servers to worry about.

the LIVE APN (WAP content only)
the WILDCARD APN (general Web content, POP3, IMAP etc.)
the PXT servers and addresses.

remove all the other crud you can see.

and add the following.
APN: live.vodafone.com
HOMEPAGE: live.vodafone.co.nz/vsl/
DATA BEARER: GPRS
SESSION: Temprorary
SECURITY: OFF
GPRS CONN: WHEN NEEDED
IP:172.030.038.003
Authentication: Normal
LOGIN: Automatic
Username: make it BLANK
Password: make it BLANK

then try to connect to "home" post the error response here if you get one.

Ok well this is just stupid now... The browser wont even load... Keeps saying Application error... wont even let me load ANY pages...

Also all the other GPRS features STILL are not working... even with those settings. Ive tried everything.... its the bin for this phone! :D

Pain in the ass... means im going to have to go find another one... and make DAM sure it works before I buy it!

Any other bright ideas? Anyone know anybody WITH an N-Gage or N-Gage QD?

Cheers.

Ahhh ok well I fixed the Application Error by hard reseting the phone! (seemed to work cos the application works fine now...)
So the connection starts... and it connects.... and looks like its starting to recieve something... but it just sits there.... with the little G icon blinking (which seems like its doing something) but nothing happens....
then it just says "Connection timed out"

I have no idea what-so-ever...

Perhaps the browser is configured to use a proxy, and it shouldn't? Also, make sure that if you're browsing a non-WAP site then you have your phone configured to connect to the Internet gateway, not the WAP gateway.

If you call up Vodafone and they say they don't have your phone, just give them a similar model number.
The n-gage is a series 60 phone, so any other series 60 phones will be exactly the same - 6600, 7610, 7650, 3660, 6600.

I have the same problem, followed Jared's instructions. I get connected to live.vodafone.com alright, only 1 problem left that when I selected one the links of the homepage to open, it pops up "sending multimedia message" then nothing happens, and stays at the homepage

Could you please advise further

Thanks heaps in advance

Hi,

Just some FYI

Vodafone Live portal has a front end that knows what phone you are using and then dishes up a format that works on that model and that’s why some phones see different content items like games and ringtones than others. This also means if you phone is not V Live approved you may only see a basic page or on some models nothing at all at it won’t load. (Yes we all know Sonny Ericssons can have the Live menu removed and its ok.)

There is a reason why they say is your phone Vodafone Live enabled and a Vodafone NZ tested phone and approved? If not you are pushing up hill. Yes imports do work but look at the issues in this post and others to get these phones to work.

My advice is see it working before you hand over the cash and leave the store. It’s not the Networks responsibility for a non approved phone.

PXT works off the same settings as V Live so you need to make sure those are correct .

See this page http://www.vodafone.co.nz/vlive/vlive_specifications.jsp

The port number needs to be checked.

Really the corect advice is posted above delete all the grud in the phone and start again.

Also as in the above post for Internet access this is not V Live see some guides on other Nokia 60 series phones

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobiles/using_your_mobile.jsp

Also make sure you call Vodafone to check your account ie not bared missing the correct GPRS APN's like * APN they will know what this means if you are not sure.

Also to anyone else go to http:/www.opera.com and replace that basic web browser with Opera once you try this there is no going back will solve a lot of web site display issues on your mobile device.

cheers.

They base the phone support based on the browser. For example, the browser built into my 7610 identifies itself as a 7610 feature set, but Opera identifies the phone (at least to what VF picks up) as a GX15.
