Looks like Telecom is set to launch its 3G network as of 1st November. Looking at the test specs etc its pretty impressive and the Harrier doesnt look to be too far away either. Go the bluetooth

Go the Bluetooth ....?

Anyway, the Harrier the CDMA 2000 1xRTT/EVDO version of HTC Blue Angel (i-mate PDA2k), with no wireless LAN capabilities. It does support the Bluetooth headset profile, and can be used as a modem.

Telecom has been testing EVDO around, and I've heart reports of up to 900kbps, with around 600kbps average. Not bad, uh?

If they can compete in price with Woosh, at least in Wellington (where the Woosh service seems faster than in Auckland, where it's just too slow), then I'd say Go TNZ!... but let's see what prices they'll talk about here.

It will certainly be interesting to see the data pricing on both 3G networks. If T3G's pricing is anything like the existing 'Mobile Jetstream' pricing, then I doubt that they will pose much threat to Woosh.

As to bluetooth, I know I've already had a winge about it this year, but Telecom still don't appear to have any bluetooth enabled handsets on the horizon. I am hoping that we might eventually get the Nokia 6255, but it still seems to be vapourware at this stage.

Goodness! I understand the coverage is wider than Woosh, but for NZ$39.95 you can get 1.2GB on Woosh. These prices are way off...

but is woosh really that mobile? they charge a roaming fee when you go 50 km out side your base area, $20 or 10 cent a megabit above your standard charges i believe(http://www.woosh.com/UserInterface/Woosh/Static/Roaming/Roaming.aspx), i can only see one type of modem, and no pc card available so how mobile can it truly be

Yes, I understand the issues with coverage and of course TNZ would want to discourage non-mobile users to get hold of a wireless connection that is actually faster than their landlines offerings. Thus price is an important part of the balance. But for comparison's sake, prices for Woosh are very good.

Ok, let's say that Woosh prices can be compared to DSL prices. Still, remember one important factor in the network is latency, so not everyone will be happy with a wireless connection - be it Woosh (WCDMA), Vodafone 3G (WCDMA) or T3G (CDMA EVDO).

Latency on T3G - minimum I have seen is 62ms, average 120ms. This is a 32byte ping. A third of 1xRTT.

Don't forget mobile is expensive to run. You can't compare to Woosh which is not mobile. For testing I have downloaded 2GB this month on T3G. Also, latency and speed are similar whether you are moving or not.
