Hi, I "have to" switch from 021 to Telecom 027 (free company mobile) and just cannot believe that in 2004, I cannot send/receive SMS to/from family and friends in Europe.
Even Telecom helpdesk confirmed this.

Is there a way around this? Some sort of a gateway? Or can you forward SMS from 021 to 027? I don't really want to carry 2 mobiles on me, but...

Thanks

The Telecom website lists (or at least used to several months ago when I last looked) the networks you can send sms's to. There are a large number of GSM networks however a lot are either one way only or one way with reply path (ie they can send a reply to your message but not send you a message directly)

Thanks for the tip, looks like I can use "one way with reply path" the reply option is only valid for 2 days, but I guess that is better than nothing!

hey IGGY,

Why didn't u get keep ur VODAFONE prepay mobile. So what if ur company gave u a telecom one. Just use the Telecom for WORK and use the vodafone mobile for ur friends. hmmmm Guess it would suck carrying 2 phones around though. U should tell ur work that u DON'T wont a telecom and that u'll use ur Vodafone mobile phone

Carrying two phones is completely impractical and using your personal phone for work purposes doesn't really work either because then you get the bill for your work related calls. It depends on the company, though, because my previous job required me to use my own phone and file an expense claim for work related calls at the end of the month.

For me, not being able to choose providers is less of an issue than having to change phone numbers every time I change jobs. But number portability should be all go by the time I move on to my next job.

I hope you're not planning on changing jobs until around 2050! :-)

sometime in '05 Telecom should have a dual CDMA/GSM phone. This would cure your worries I think

I've no doubt that my employer will chain me to my desk if I try to leave at any stage during the next 50 years. Fortunately, they don't know about my evil plan to retire before then. :)

But, seriously, the dual CDMA/GSM combo sounds like an excellent idea and it's just what Telecom needs to cure their global roaming woes. Up until now, Telecom's range of handsets has fallen way short of the market's expectations (not because there's anything wrong with the handsets on offer but, rather, there is a lack of choice), so keep them coming!

the dual phone will be a double edged sword for TNZ, but in the long run, should prove to be a great benefit.

Not sure on any brand / specs yet though. It will also be great for those who wish to take advantage of offers on both networks.

A dual mode phone is not really any different to the dual/triple SIM holders available. They are still quite popular in the UK because you can take advantage of the cheaper calls to same network phones and take advantage of the free minutes etc that each network offers simply by cycling between SIM cards.

The interesting thing will be whether Telecom would actually issue their own 530-03 GSM simcards or load ones still.

It would be good if the planned dual phone could have both networks active simultaneously, rather than switching between them as required.
