Family member wants to upgrade her Samsung Galaxy S7 to probably and S20. She has some old text messages of sentimental value on the phone and does not want to lose them. Will text messages be automatically transferred  to the new phone or can they be backed up in some way and then copied across?

Thanks.

It can pay to use an app like SMS Backup and Restore as a matter of course, as this ensures one always has texts backed up (I just have it automated to backup to OneDrive on a regular basis), but equally such apps can be used to transfer texts from one phone to another as a one-off event.

Samsung has an app that transfers everything.

To be doubly sure back up on Samsung cloud and google.

Don't reset old phone until you've checked everything.

Obviously some apps with secure passwords eg bank etc will be to be reactivated or re login

Thanks, I will back up the messages first just to be sure.

There's also the samsung cloud backup and the native google backup which you can access via settings. The google one will do phone settings (known wifi etc / backgrounds) as well as SMS and some app data.

Or utilise the samsung smart switch software when you're setting up the S20.
