im talkin about developing a web page that handle input from text messages and then perform some calculation or operation and output the result on another webpage.

eg people texting the latest score of a soccer match and the website handles the data and outputs the latest score on a different papge.

i know java programming and JSP/Servlet.

but what areas should i research to find out about the info i need

Check the two-way service from Clickatell. Messages sent to a number can be sent to your server via ftp, file or HTTP post. The last one should do the trick for you.

Don't worry about the WAP comment, since not everyone can access WAP and SMS is more present.

You mean you don't understand the Clickatell website? The service you have to look for on the site is called two-way SMS. You have to register with Clickatell, then you can arrange a short SMS code with Clickatell in a variety of countries. You will pay for SMS received at 1/2 credit rate, each credit is around EUR 0.04. The SMS received on your number will be automatically routed to a file or a webserver as a POST to any script you have there (could be a .php, .asp, .aspx for example). Then you do whatever you want with the information.
