I am a student heading off to university next year and im having trouble which Telecom phone to buy. They all seem pretty good. I am keen on the clamshell design but I am not sure if it is worth paying the extra, and I am keen to stick with the tried and true Nokia name if this is a good idea. I need a solid phone that I can synch with a PC easily.

Cheers. Any help appreciated

For PC sync your best bet is a Nokia. The 3205 is good value

I still think the Sanyo 8100 is a better phone than the Hyundai (although the Hyundai in its own right is a gr8 phone for the price)

Any particular reason for Telecom? You can get nice, cheap parallel imported GSM phones for Voda/TelstraClear from stores like StudentShop and eTown.

One simple reason for Telecom - the price of text messaging. Text for 2005 will cost me about $100 on Telecom and over $1000 for the equivalent on Vodafone.

The Motorola E398 is THE phone that I am keen on but I simply can't afford to run the beast

You might be able to import them, but you'll hit a snag when you attempt to connect the handset to the Telecom network. Unfortunately, Telecom won't connect anything that they haven't PTC tested. IMO, this is a major drawback of CDMA networks compared to GSM.

What is the calendar like on the TX115c, for example does it do reminders etc like a Nokia? Does it run the same UI as the TX95c?

Yeah, it does reminders etc. I've never used a TX95C so i dunno if the software is the same. it's quite good though.

More than like telecom wont let you connect it cat-mince. One offs are to expensive to connect to the network. And the 115c uses the same data cable and software as the 95c as far as I can tell.

Hi,

If you are syncing with a lap top ( or a desktop with IR ), Id recommend you get an IR capable phone like the 6xxx series nokia's. I use a 6585 and sync with outlook on my lap top via IR. I works really well, and I dont have to worry about cables and stuff...

PTC testing ensures maximum compatibility of handsets on the network. To have an open system like GSM invites some of the problems that GSM has such as phones arriving in the country with incorrect settings for data/wap use etc, which inevitably generate calls to the carrier which drains resources (for a handset they made $0 on). (and much more...)

Disenchanted dont you think your thinking about it the wrong way. Sure you may get a few calls to the carrier, and a few lost sales but a telcos job is to be a telco not a retail shop. Telecom need as many people as possible on their system.

Have you noticed that most foreign students all use GSM? Why because they bring new phones over from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia etc and hook them up here. Spending 10 min on the phone with Vodaphone and then spending Hundreds of dollars on vodaphones services (surely this is more productive).

Everyone knows that telecom has a bad reputation for its phone selection and issues with getting replacement phones etc. People do think about this when they equate whether buying a new phone.

Im sure telecom have thought about it, but its kind of like free trade and other ideas. Open the market up stop network switching costs, allow consumers to quickly get on to telecom network and im sure alot of vodaphone customers will switch once they see telecom has a better speed and voice clarity.

My 2cents worth - cheers
