Hello did you know that in New Zealand (I don't know about overseas) well anyway with your celluar phone you can get a mobile account. With your Telecom celluar phone you have to get a Xtra e-mail account. With Vodafone you can choose which E-mail company you want to stick with

Hmmm... Yes, that's why we discuss GPRS, CDMA and 3G around here.

Well did you know that Telecom puts blocks on it POP servers, I'm not quite sure what this thread is about and if its worth writing in.

Telecom does not block access to the Xtra POP servers from other ISPs. It does block access to the SMTP servers. This is standard practice and is called 'SMTP Anti relay'. You can still use a web browser to send or receive Xtra email via another ISP. If you want to use Outlook then sign up a 'Secure Remote Email' which is $2.50 p/month which allows access from other ISPs/networks. Go here http://www.xtra.co.nz/products/0,,11954,00.html

Hmmm? I thought pop.xtra.co.nz was blocked as well. People using other ISP couldn't get to this server to retrieve e-mail.

As for the SMTP I think it's very good idea. In my case I use the myrealbox.com smtp servers, which is free - but they're not accepting registrations anymore. If you need to use a SMTP server while roaming or in another network, try smtp.com. They provide this service for a fee.

Well they did block them up to not that long ago, and where did I mention anything about SMTP that would be common sense,

smtp.xtra.co.nz is blocked from non-xtra networks (obviously)

pop3.xtra.co.nz is blocked from non-xtra networks also (executive decision?)

Mobile email on the Xtra WAP menu only allows Xtra email accounts to be used from it. (expectedly)

Theres nothing stopping you from using your ISP email account through Off-menu WAP.

ie. visit webmail.whatever-isp-you-want.com through WAP (assuming it doesn't require plug-ins)

Xtra does offer Secure-remote email which allows access to Xtra's secure smtp server (smtpr.xtra.co.nz) and Xtra's secure pop server (pop3r.xtra.co.nz)

So - Id have to disagree you there aaronsylvestor, now you know :)

What's the logic in blocking POP3 access from non-Xtra IPs? It sounds anti-competitive, not to mention a pain in the backside for Xtra users on the move.

Can the secure servers be accessed from external networks (non-Xtra/TNZ access)? The sentence is not clear.

YES - you can access your Xtra email from non-Xtra/Telecom networks if you use the Xtra Secure Email service.

It's probably worth clarifying that with regard to the SMTP blocking. It's generally done at the other end. ie: if you're connected through XTRA/IHUG/etc but have a clear email account you can't sent via smtp.clear.net.nz (ie: they'll refuse to relay your email). Pretty well every isp blocks external users from their smtp servers or otherwise there'd be a complete spam free for all.

The pop3 side of things, almost noone used to block external users from downloading their email, however when they had the whole free isp thing, it became a bit more common. ie: people would have an account with an ISP that had so many free minutes, and then per minute charges. Once they were out of time, they used the free isp's. The blocking pop3 was (IMHO) a reasonable step. Otherwise the ISP pays to receive the email, and then pays again when the user downloads from a non local (not with that isp) connection. Webmail being the mainstream exception.

For the SMTP side though, quite a few of the ISP's support SMTP Authentication. So provided they allow external pop3 access (or you pay a fee to have it enabled), you can set SMTP authentication and everything works the same regardless of if you're on your normal connection or a remote/mobile one.

Jp.

PS: the blocking of pop3.xtra.co.nz is new to me too. AFAIK it never used to be blocked, but it looks like they've dropped external routes to it. A traceroute from paradise cable ends at xtra.ape.net.nz, and tracing from an orcon dsl connection ends at 203.96.120.154 which is a Telecom/NetGate owned IP.

The POP3 blocking on Xtra is effective since December 2002. It does impact on users who need to access their e-mails when travelling. Sure they can access using a webmail, but this can't beat the convenience of a proper e-mail client.

SMTP should not be a worry to any user. As I said, there are options available: some ISP allow SMTP with authentication (pointed by jpwise), and if this is not possible then there are SMTP providers for a fee (smtp.com and others).

December 2002... hmmmmm
Isn't when all those FREE dialup accounts came out? (zfree, i4free etc....)

That'd prolly be why, aside from the fact that Xtra server are used for mobile email as well, Telecom would be wanting to milk as much as they can..

Customer: "can i use email on my mobile?" Telecom "yeh sure sign up with xtra"

or

Customer "But I want to use my xtra email from my paradise account" Telecom "yeh no problem, $99 setup fee for secure remote...

Makes sense (for telecom) in many ways,
