My Dad's heading over to Tasmania for a couple of weeks and needs a SIM to keep in contact with NZ. Does anyone know offhand of a good value and coverage option (included data is irrelevant for his phone).

The best coverage for Tasmania is on the Telstra network, 2nd is Optus and 3rd Vodafone.

That's also how they rank on a national scale too.

There are lots of MVNO (mobile virtual network operators in Australia)

So I recommend your dad uses Telstra or an MVNO that uses Telstra's network.

If he will have access to WiFi over there, then he could just use his NZ SIM and WhatsApp or equivalent.

NB. I live in Australia but haven't been to Tasmania, so my recommendation is based solely on this internet research.

Just be warned Telstra (and I assume the other Australian operators) is quite strict at identity checking. It's not just popping in a SIM and off you go like here in NZ. If he goes with Tesltra he would need to go through a process via the Telstra website (accessed via mobile) to set up a Telstra account, provide his details, etc. I found this process quite slow going. It didn't help it kept failing at one particular point (can't remember what, something like would you want to auto top up or not -- and I remember pressing no and it just froze at that point) until I decided to try a different option and it was all fine afterwards.

However if he can pop into the Telstra store at the airport they would probably be able to handle all this for him. Or if you have family/friends there perhaps someone could set this up ready for your dad to pop in.

What NZ carrier is he with? It may be less hassle to purchase a weekly plan if his NZ carrier offers this. Also means he keeps his NZ number as well which is a nice benefit.

Linux's suggestion of setting up an eSim prior to departure is a good one too.

Thanks for the replies, he'll probably decide between just getting it sorted at a Telstra kiosk in the airport for ease, or swing by a Woolworths for one of their SIMs.
