I travel to Waihi Beach for my annual holidays, and never get any decent coverage on my nokia N95 - everyone complains about coverage there, until this year when a few newer hand-sets were getting full coverage. I logged a call with Vodafone about the coverage, who advised we are 7.5km from the 2G site so the scratchy coverage on my N95 that I get will be from that. The new 3G tower will be broadcasting on the WCDMA 900Mhz frequency.

Check the specs my N95 only has WCDMA HSDPA 2100
My wifes new phone Nokia 3120c has WCDMA HSDPA 900/1200
My wifes phone gets full coverage standing right next to me when I get none.

My question is will the iPhone work - its specs say UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz) and GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

Thanks

No the iPhone will only offer as good a coverage as you are now getting with your N95. The iPhone doesn't support 900mhz HSDPA which is what your wifes 3120c is picking up :)

The Nokia 5800 is launching soon I think and DOES support 900mhz HSDPA.

The 3120c is not HSDPA btw, just WCDMA :)

Thanks - thought so - I might go for an N85 or N96 then - works paying, but I need coverage while I'm holiday so they can contact me :-)

Another great device is also the Nokia E71-1 900/2100mhz

Also we fixed a coverage / Call quality issue on the Waihi 2G site about 2 weeks ago

Do you think, possibly, that johnr is being paid off by your wife for a peaceful holiday?

thanks johnr - yes i noticed at Akl Anniversary weekend I only had to stand on the bbq table and not climb the tree for coverage, so something was slightlly better.

nate - i had to buy the wife off - after a xmas holiday where she had no coverage and continual moaning/nagging,  a 3120c for her the first week back in Jan sorted the situation.
