Good one... The real answer to this question will not be known until it happens. There are so many market conditions involved on this. Competition moves, market changes, regulatory policies.

What really happened? A lot of talk, but their decision ended up being final. The unlimited SMS didn't come back, TNZ managed to capture more market with their $10 campaign.

If they did drop it, people would complain and whinge again, but to what end? You would allready own a telecom handset, and have spent a lot of money with them already........ whats the alertnitive, vodafone? (Although VF generally have better handsets...., and CS)

I would wager a bet and say that by the end of '05, bulk texting plans may return, but better value than the old "Text Me" plans.

Maybe something along the lines of pay $x for x-texts (say, in lots of $10, and buy more as you need them, even in the same month).

A lot of this sort of thing goes on overseas.

Good thought, but the majority of heavy text messaging users are teenagers who all use prepaid connections as they are unable to apply for credit to get a billed connection.

I suppose that it would be theoretically possible to dock $x per month off a prepaid account and apply a monthly allocation to that account, but it would be a minefield from a billing perspective. For example, what would happen if Johnny Prepaid signs up for a plan that costs $20 per month, but there is insufficient credit on his account when the monthly charge is due to be debited?

If it was prepaid, then it should be applied at the start of the billing cycle. Failure to have enough credit within an account would mean that the user would be returned to the default billing cycle, until there is enough credit to activate the plan.

If you weren't on a prepaid based plan, then the cost could be charged later. I probably just repeated the same as what you said, but Chinamobile here seems to do a similar thing. You can get Caller ID, callertones etc but if you don't have the credit, then it isn't activated. Mind you with Chinamobile you can get negative balances as well.

They (Boost) already did charge for text messages to Vodafone if I recall correctly. My sister had the 1000text monster text plan (or something like that) from Boost and they charged 20c per Vodafone message.

Who knows???

I am hoping that there will be some intergration between IM (instant messaging) and SMS.

As it is I can use MSN, IRC and a horde of other instant messaging/chat protocol from my smartphone and only pay for the data it uses ($8-10/mb on casual plans and $1-2/mb on a data plan).

All that is needed for more widespread use of this is more low-end (sub-$200) handsets that support Java and MIDP2.

biggest reasons behind removing $10 text was so many immature brats using it for harrassment and abuse.

It's really disgusting how a few abusive people ruin these things for everyone else but, even though you're right, I feel that Telecom could have predicted that this might happen and they should have implemented safeguards (whether a cap, or some other restriction) against it right from the beginning.

The only reason I signed up with Telecom was because of $10 txt and I am praying they will bring out another (if not better) plan at the end of 2005 otherwise they are gonna lose almost the whole market to Vodafone because Telecom hasnt got anything better than Vodafone and Vodafone have got all the better handsets.

I think this is perception, and may not be true. Remember, Telecom is the small operator, when compared with Vodafone. They actually have some good mobile services available, and the 3G services to come will be interesting. Of course some of these will not appeal to SMS users, but video calls, high speed data and other services are quite nice actually.
