" Presence-enhanced contacts enable you to conveniently share your availability information with your colleagues, family and friends.

For instance, when you are in a meeting, people can check your availability status directly from their presence contacts – without the need to make a call.

With presence-enhanced contacts you can...

* ... tell people whether your presence is currently public or private.
* ... select the groups who have permission to see your presence status.
* ... share your availability.
* ... use personalized logos for different availability status situations.
* ... use personalized presence message texts to be shown to people trying to reach you"

i know a little more now...

so, it's a service provided by the telco network.
whereby your free/busy status is avialble to others

TCP/IP based???

must it be provided by the telco, or could you just connect over gprs andinternet to your own server?

Wouldn't you need someone else with that same feature to see if vodafone supported it or not? It wouldn't work with people who don't have that feature on their phone. Alternatively, just ring customer services and ask about it. I've found vodafone's customer service to be pretty legendary, they can also answer quite a few of my annoying technical questions.
