Howdy,

My old man lives in the far north and has a really old Nokia Handset. Can't remember the model but everyone had the same model in the early days.

Anyway, the reception isn't great out at his place, so he's looking for a new phone. He went into his local Vodafone and explained the reason why he wants a new one. (Better reception)

He also mentioned to the sales person that the region name on his screen always switches between two different rebounders when he is on his property.

The sales person told him that a new tri, or quad band handset will help with alot with this problem.

I'm no telecoms expert, but that sounds a little wierd. I thought the extra bands are just to cover you when you are in different countries.

I mean, I have a Samsung U900, and I think that's quad band, yet my reception out there is still crap. The U900 doesn't seem to have a great aerial however.

Can anyone confirm, and know of a particular handset that has notoriously good reception?

Cheers
Aaron

Whether a phone is tri band or quad band GSM won't make any difference - Vodafone's network uses 900MHz GSM for it's entire coverage. 1800MHz GSM is used for additional capacity in major CBD areas but this is simply additional capacity, it's not additional coverage.

There are now plenty of areas that are 3G only and don't offer any GSM coverage. At present Vodafone's 3G network is all 2100MHz 3G but their 3G network is being extended to duplicate their GSM coverage using the 900Mhz 3G band. Only a handful of phones support this band.

Very soon you will start to see new Vodafone coverage that is 900Mhz 3G only, meaning that if you have an older Vodafone mobile you will not get coverage. Have a new handset and it will work fine.

If you're after a low(er) cost handset that will futureproof yourself I'd go for a Nokia 6121 as this supports all bands used by Vodafone in NZ.

Ditto with going for the Nokia 6121. PM me for more options if you need to improve reception further after this.

Cool, hope it works well. There is a lot of new 3G 900 Mhz coverage coming live in the north, so he'll be able to take advantage of a larger coverage foot print & better voice quality too.
