The ROM update for the Harrier Pocket PC Phone Edition seems to be slowly going out of the door - first some corporate clients and soon it will be available from the Telecom NZ website. I am told it may be sometime next week (31st January). The new versions are:
Bluetooth version BT-PPC/PE 1.0.0 build 3500
ROM 1.35.00 WWE
ROM date 12/10/04
Radio version HA01_141
Protocol version AA3.3.301
ExtROM version 1.35.117 WWE
It seems stable and I was told it fixes problems with Bluetooth headset performance, although I've already reported that it looks though that Bluetooth DUN is still not 100%.

It came in a good time, because my Harrier was going through 100% of its battery in 8 hours with radio off! After a hard reset it came back to normal, and I suspect of a program. Currently I'm testing the Harrier without this program, just to make sure.

Good on Telecom NZ for doing this release. Let's see if the official file in their website contains a release document listing the fixes and updates in this version.

List of fixes/updates:

Firmware version 1.35.117
Upgrade radio to 1.41
Bluetooth stack to 3500
Remove duplicated templates in camera settings
Swapping battery without turning off the power no longer causes loss of photos/video clips.

The Bluetooth DUN has been extensively tested and it does now work. I have had connections active for hours.

I stand corrected! The Bluetooth DUN actually works really well - I'm posting from my tablet PC connected to CDMA EV-DO through my Harrier. I was using the wrong username in my first test...

Note the US flag under my name... Telecom NZ using a strange IP range, I can see it's not similar to other NZ based IP addresses.

Hi,
Please excuse my ignorance but most of the above means little to me. I have a Harrier which I use a bluetooth headset and they seem to work successfully. The battery life is poor but from what I have read seems to be on par with others experiences.

Can someone explain in simple english what this ROM update actually means? Is it some sort of software update?

ALso, what is this Radio?

I had a quick search on Telecom's website but not sure what section to be looking under.

Thanks

riahon, a ROM update provides a new version of the Operating System running on your Pocket PC. It brings fixes and some updated software.

The radio we're talking about is the part of the hardware (Pocket PC) that communicates with the mobile network - like the radio that exists on standard mobile phones.

Bluetooth DUN (dial-up networking) is a service offered by Bluetooth that allows a laptop or desktop computer to connect to the Internet through your Harrier.

This updated will only be available from 7 February. You should only perform it if you have your data stored safely. PIM data like Contacts, Calendar will be automatically copied on your Outlook, but other files you copied into your Pocket PC need to have a synchronised copy on your computer so you can restore later.

At last. I wish I had read this last night.

Just a warning. Don't get impatient and try installing the imate bluetooth patch. It disables the phone. You have to do a hard reset to get everything working again. Don't ask how I know.

Can someone let me know the Telecom url that advises of the rom update. I can't find it.

So in a week and half, I'll be able to use truly wireless DUN and my bluetooth headset should still work after the Harrier goes into sleep mode.

Yay, I won't need to send the Harrier back after all. I can't wait.

We will not ask, but this is a good advice to everyone... Just because the Harrier Pocket PC Phone Edition looks like the PDA2k they're not exactly the same.

So never, never, never install a ROM or OS patch intended to one device on another.

The ROM update is not available yet, and official notice will be posted/distributed at later stage. Wait until the release date when a web page will be available where Telecom New Zealand users can download the update from their official website.

I have installed the ROM upgrade (corporate copy).

The bluetooth DUN works well, so no need for the cradle anymore.

The bluetooth headset now stays connected while the Harrier is on which is good. But when it goes into sleep mode, it loses connection to the bluetooth headset 9 times out of 10. I've tried two types of headset but still doesn't work.

So, no worries when calling out, but it takes around 20 seconds to reconnect to the headset when the phone wakes up for an incoming call. This is too slow to answer the call so I have to answer it on the Harrier.

A step forward, but still not ideal.

Any update as to when this ROM update will be available to the public? Seems Telecom are holding back for some reason? Cheers

It should be on the Telecom web site tonight. There is no deliberate hold up just legal requirements that need to be meet.

No it can't be reversed. It's like replacing the engine in your car. The 1.29.00 WWE version the Harrier shipped with is buggy. So far not heard any bad things about the update from the corporate sector users that received it prior to the public release.
