Hi there, have been weighing up my options for the new XT network and what suits me most is the iPhone 16gb 3.0, as i know with a HSDPA of 850/1900/2100 it is perfect for XT. I have a friend coming over from hong kong in a few weeks and am thinking of asking him what he can get them for over there. What i want to know is what would you expect to get one for over there? Also any idea as to whether they are locked? I just thought if he could get it a lot cheaper over there then why not get him to bring one over.

I think the Hong Kong models are not locked - but I am not sure what your friend will find. Also you won't have any warranty. And he may have to pay GST when entering New Zealand.

Vodafone sells unlocked iPhone 3G... Check their prices.

I think you will find the price wont be that much cheaper. I had a look at one of the major hongkong stores (similar to dick smith etc) and apple products were relativley expensive over there too..  Once you factor in the no warranty as well things start to look worse. Also i hope your friend has a good eye and can tell a well made hongkong knockoff from a legit iphone :)

For apple products. The price wont be much different especially the iphone. Also hk dont use 850mhz wcdma although im not sure if iphones different from different region.
Ipods are generally $50nz than the stores in nz. Depends on the exchange rate.
I check mobile pricing every week in hk. So yeah. Hk dont run 850 thats for sure

Neither does NZ yet, doesn't mean we haven't had the 850UMTS iPhone on sale for the best part of a year . . .

But yes, make sure it supports the same bands as the NZ one (I don't recall any mention anywhere of there being anything other than the one version, but check it out)
