I have reviewed several messages last night on V400,Bluetooth,Cingular connectivity. I have a similar but still different issue. I have a Toshiba laptop,Motorola USB mobile tools kit including cable and a Motorola V400 (Cingular service). I have had conversations with both Cingular and Motorola techs last week. Motorola says this should be possible even if I choose the "use Windows Dial-in settings" instead of GSM/GPRS. I have set up an account with netzero and have tried to connect once the modem/USB connection is configured. Every number dialed (initiated via MobilePhoneTools) I can hear the three tone error message from the phone then an error 678 modem not responding. I verified the number with a regular phone and I can hear the Modulation Tone. Phone connection is rated as 56K v90 if that makes a difference. Cingular says I have to have GPRS set up, which is another $20+ a month. I aready have MediaNET+ and have the phone set up for text messaging. I can "surf" the internet with the phone, but Cingular says it will not work as a Data Modem without the DATA service. Seems like they just want more money? Should I be able to dial another "modem" and connect as if I have a Hard Line? Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.

In general CSD connections (line a normal modem) would require a data service from the company - not a GPRS service. However, as a test only, you can try using ATZ; as your init string instead of anything else - and keep using the Bluetooth DUN service.

I've seen that all these new Motorola mobile devices require the ATZ (reset string) before connecting, even to GPRS...

I substituted ATZ for the *9***1# in the initialization string, but nothing happened. I still get the Three Tone - Not a working number message. It seems the modem does not respond as I would expect. This message appears after the failure: "The remote computer did no respond. For further assistance, click more information or search Help and Support Center for this error number." Note - no error number?

*99***1# is not a init string. It is the number to dial for a GPRS connection. It must be used only in the Number to dial field and only if you want to connect to GPRS.

If you enter this in the Init String, your modem (in this case the mobile phone) will probably come back with an error.

You should have only ATZ; or nothing in the Init String, and then the ISP number you're trying to reach in the number to dial field. Again, if you want to connect to GPRS - which is a different service - then you should use *99# or *99***[x]#, where [x] is the connection number in your mobile phone configuration.

Search for Cingular in our forum and you'll find a few posts with the correct configuration for GPRS if needed.

I tried the ATZ thing last night and it did not work. Next I went to the forums to look around, as you suggested. I found a message with instructions about GPRS setting and Cingular Wireless. I deleted the internet setting and created another one. This time I used GPRS and plugged in the WAP settings as described in the message. It Worked! Is the WAP@.... userid a generic or is this someone's actual account. Just curious.

Great stuff... The WAP@ is a generic user id.
