To check all you need is the ESN. It's normally given as an 11 digit dec (decimal) number or an 8 digit hex (hexadecimall).

I'm not sure about from there, but if you ring 123 they should in theory put you through to the right people if you tell them you're looking at buy it second hand but just want to make sure it's not stolen first. Otherwise a store might be able to help you, but you'd really need to be serious about getting it connected through whoever you deal with at the store if you get it. ie: they don't get anything out of it if you don't connect. But if you make the connection through them they get paid for the new connection (AFAIK), so they'll be more willing to help. I'd try 123 first tho.

PS: Also make sure it actually is "disconnected". Not suspended or disconnected for billing reasons (ie: unpaid account). If they say it's disconnected and there's nothing owing on it you shouldn't have a problem with reconnecting it through a store.
