Hi. I am wanting to get a new phone. I am looking at the Nokia N85 but I don't want to pay $1300 when I could get it cheaper from overseas. I want to put it on the new Telecom XT network. Will it be able to connect to that network?

The N85 comes in 2 flavours. You need the American version that does 850MHz UMTS

You will just need to buy the N85 that says WCDMA 850MHZ

I'm considering getting one from Oz from MobiCity. Telstra operates an 850 3G network so their handsets will work on the XT network.

If my calculations are correct it should be around NZ$797.38

Current Phone:
- Android: Samsung SM-G900F Galaxy S5 (XT)
- Win Phone 8: Samsung ATIV S (XT)

Current Tablet:

- Acer Iconia 7" Android Tablet

Telstra locks their handsets so you will need them to unlock it for you - usually it is free when you are there and they can do it on the spot.

According to MobiCity's website - "MobiCity - your mobile destination for unlocked phones."

Just to confirm either way I've emailed them to enquire.

Only Australian GST of 10% surely? Which you can claim back when importing it into NZ. But at NZ customs, you still need to pay GST of 12.5% plus any of their fees.
You cannot claim back NZ GST when leaving the country either.

That's buying it from their site only (Inc Shipping) :/

+12.5% GST = NZ$897.05

That makes www.phonesdirect.co.nz cheaper - Nokia N85 $870.00 (Inc GST & Shipping)

I bought a mobile from them . Quite alright. They were quite good with communication. He kept me up to date.

xrajux: Expert Infotech has the phone listed for $741.30 inc gst on their website, they are auckland based.

The only issue with that one is it may not be XT compatible. They list the Operating frequency as Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, no UMTS 850.
