How can you tell if a phone will work with both vodafone and xt?

The phone must support WCDMA 850/2100 MHz to work with both operators. This will only work on Vodafone 2100MHz, not their new "extended 3G" which is actually 900MHz.

Note it's WCDMA not GSM.

Yes according to the ebay page you posted that phone is 850UMTS in addition to 1900 and 2100.

Extended 3G is Vodafone's branding for their 900 MHz UMTS/WCDMA network outside of the major cities.

Try this page link below. I checked out many of the 'lists' of campatible phones around but this one appears to be the only accurate one. Try it BEFORE you make a cockup like I did!!

Cheers

But treat it with caution - phones like the Nokia E71 that come in different variants have it a little confused at the moment.

But yes, great idea Telecom providing that service.

You can do it yourself by visiting the link posted above and entering the IMEI number into that page.

He wants to check the other way around.

Looks like it will work on 2G and cities 3G, not the new Vodafone 3G extended.

Find a friend who has a VF sim and try their SIM card in it to be sure.

As above, on VF should do 2G, probably cities 3G and won't do rural 3G

850/2100 WCDMA phones seem to work the best from my experience. Vodafone have quite good coverage on 2100 ('extended'), and Telecom seem to use 850 a lot.

2100 is NOT extended 3G. 900 WCDMA is extended 3G.

Telecom don't just use 850 WCDMA a lot - it's 100% of their network. They also have some 2100 sites in major CBD's to help with capacity and infill.

Right now there is not a single handset available that will work optimally on both Vodafone and Telecom as there are none that support both 850 and 900 WCDMA bands. This will change in the future.
