I've just bought a Telecom Falcon, after being conned into buying a Thera by a shark on TradeMe (these cannot be connected in New Zealand if they were mported i.e. Sprint or Verizon branded) - anyway, that's a different story with legal action being taken to sort it out.

On the Falcon, great Pocket PC with phone included - I need to have everytinh in one device, used to the old Kyocera.

Great you can now buy these things for $700, used to be twice the price.

One minor problem - I want to use the Falcon as a modem, as I could do with the Nokia 2820 which it replaces - but my laptop only has USB - no serial or infra red. The phone is only configured to act as a modem with serial or infra red.

Does anyonwe know of a workaround? e.g another version of Wmodem that supports USB - so I can use the phone as a modem while it is in the cradle - I guess there would also need to be a driver to sit on my laptop to make the PC see the phone\modem?

Any ideas greatfull received.

Cheers

I think you are out of luck, there is no update to Wmodem that I know of. I have always used IR or a serial cable.

I am curious about what sort of laptop doesn't have IR or serial?

The laptop is a Packard Bell, pretty much and NEC. It is the easynote C3 which has Fireweire, 3 USB, VGA but no serial or IR. Would IR plugged into the USB port be recognised as IR or USB?

Thanks freitsam, tried this but with the version of wmodem, can't select USB as a connection option at the Falcom end. There are only 2 options, serial or IR, which was why I wondered if there wasanother version of the Wmodem software.

an irda dongle would be detected as ir cos it would make the connection

is it possible that you can select serial and be connected via usb

Thanks SNicolle, I guess I'll try the IR option, should be able to pick up a USB device for $50ish. It appears that serial is definitely serial, not Universal Serial. Cheers
