Hey.

Does anybody know the Data Transfer Technology which Vodafone will be using for their new 3G network?

I am looking at the specs for the Nokia 3200 and it has EDGE as well as GPRS...so I'm kinda hoping that it could work on Vodafones new 3G network, when they bring it out.

Thanks.
PHil.

I believe that Vodafone won't be using EDGE as its just a step up to near 3g. They'll go directly to WCDMA (referred as 3gsm or something) which shouldn't be confused with Telecoms CDMA xrt1? / evdo network.

My p910 supports edge apparently, which I got to try in China but can't use edge here.

Anyway, hope this helps and that I'm not too wrong.

That's correct. EDGE is very popular in the USA, with speeds just a little bit higher than CDMA 1xRTT (or Mobile Jetstream here).

Vodafone will move directly to WCDMA also known as UMTS in Europe. And no, it's not to be confused with CDMA and its variants, like the ones used by Telecom New Zealand - these are different beasts, with some similarity in the name...

All the new sites that have being built in the last 15 months (approx) do have EDGE TRXs but they are not turned on

It would be nice be able to use EDGE on the sites that had it... Doubt they'd do that though.

Vodafone worldwide have stayed steered completely clear of EDGE for some unknown reason. Many European networks have made the decision to deploy EDGE to cover rural areas that are unlikely to see 3GSM coverage in the forseeable future (if at all) and it's taken off in the US as well. Does anybody actually know why Vodafone made the decision not to use it anywhere in the world?

sbiddle, who knows? I was going to say on the NZ platform only they could be skipping EDGE because WCDMA (3GSM) is a tad more competitive (speed wise ? ) against Telecoms CDMA EVDO (or even xrtt? ).

But if they are doing it worldwide, who knows, maybe someone here does.

As for "That will not happen there is more to it then just the TRXs, " by jcr976 - I suspected as much but am not entirely farmilar with the back end of cell phone networks (would like to learn though), haven't found any good reads about it myself.
