Why can't my phone play mp3s as ringtones?!

I paid enough for it yet this feature seems to be disabled or locked. I bought my K700i from vodafone. Did their branded software disable this feature or what?

Yup, that's exactly what it is.

The debranded K700i firmware allows you to play mp3's as ringtones quite happily.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

Can I get this firmware upgrade from a site or do I need to go to a service center?

i believe you will legitimately struggle to cross brand your phone, however you can go to http://developer.sonyericsson.com and sign up and then download DRM packager that allows you to assign digital rights to your mp3s (doing this renames their extension also) and once you load them on your phone you should be able to use them as tones

Is this file the one supplied by Sony Ericsson Developer World?

If so, sorry I had to remove the post because of copyright issues with distribution or links to copyrighted material...

I had this exact struggle with my T610 when I bought it Vodafone Live! branded. I fought tool and nail with both SonyEricsson and Vodafone. The bottom line is, they've done a deal with each other so you won't be able to get your phone debranded in New Zealand at any "offical" service centre.

However, there are a number of people (such as myself or on trademe) who offer debranding services, or you can do it yourself. To do it yourself will require a little bit of time and purchasing "credits" to use with a client program that will change the firmware of your phone, but if you're a true geek it's quite rewarding to figure out and do.

This is ridiculous! I have the DRM packager and I uploaded the DM encoded mp3 to my phone, went to select 'use as ringtone' and it still says it can't be used!

I'm fairly sure no matter what you do, the Vodafone firmware won't allow the use of MP3s for ringtones.

The reason for this is simple, if you can't use MP3s of your choice, you'll go to Vodafone Live! and pay $3 to download something crappy.

I know in some later versions of the K700i Voda branded firmware the DRM restrictions are a little more relaxed, but I'm not sure if this means you can use MP3s for ringtones or not.

Once you see an unbranded K700i you'll realise just what a horrible thing Vodafone firmware really is! :)
