They will release their handsets when they launch their network which has always been planned for July.

Nothing stopping you from buying a phone from a non Vodafone store.

Why not wait for Vodafone NZ to announce it. I'm sure they will spend some $ advising people.

You could try getting the Option fusion card from expansys - it has 3G, GPRS and WiFi.

http://www.expansys.com.au/product.asp?code=114089

Either that or you could try getting a card from Option (www.option.com).
I found that the easiest way when we wanted a GPRS card - we got it about 6-12 months before Vodafone finally launched the card in New Zealand.

Curly - whats with the loyalty? Do you want mobile broadband or not? If you do get a T3G card from Telecom and enjoy 500kbps. If you don't want mobile broadband wait for the Voda 3G card and you may be lucky to get 120kbps.

Jama what a load of rubbish and I can see you have never used one of there 3G cards or 3G handsets. I have a good friend that is on the 3G trial and the speed you have quoted is way off. You have no idea what you are talking about.

jcr976 - one friend on a trial on an unloaded network does not give a true indication of the 'real world' speed. Before Telecom officially launched EVDO I was getting 1.6Mbps now I get 500kbps. Considering the max speed on Voda UMTS is 384kbps the 'real world' would be between 120 to 200kbps. I even recall a presentation I attended recently where Voda downplayed the 'real world' speed setting the expectation at 200kbps or less.

So - I do know what I am talking about.

jcr976 - this is an open forum and I am a member therefore it is not up to you to decide who can and can not contribute.

I am only stating the facts and here you go. This is how UMTS works:

UMTS networks are typically designed with a link budget assuming 128kbps downlink data rate ie. for the planned subscribers and traffic the network will be able to allocate a 128kbps bearer. In coverage holes, non-optimal areas and beyond the (planned) edges of the network congestion control will rate-switch to 64kbps downlink, and then failing that to a 32kbps common (shared) channel. In reality these congestion control actions are more likely to be invoked due to (unplanned) spikes in demand rather than poor coverage.

Cut and paste all you like did you ever think the person that started this thread may travel out of New Zealand and travel to countires like Japan and UK and other countries that Voda NZ already offer 3G roaming. This thread is about the Vodafone NZ 3G network not the T3G card.

jcr976 - Wow... your an angry young man who doesn't know how to love aren't ya! Now, I don't see where Jama said Telecom's better- and in fact he didn't even say Voda's worse! He just pointed out some facts about the technology!!

Personally I hope you do get your Voda set-up. Then you can surf around the internet at speeds you wont believe (cos they are not very fast compared to EV-DO), and you'll be paying top dollar...

[Moderator edited this post]

You see I'm making my purchasing discussions based on technical data, not emotion. Your shopping technique is fine with me, don't get me wrong! The world needs people like you, so we marketing bods and brand awareness people can make more money! And when we spend that money, we pay more tax, some of which is spent on mental health institutions- which means you'll be looked after when the frustration of surfing with Voda finally breaks you!

Satire (?!?) aside, can you actually provide any real data on Voda's speeds, other than "I know this guy / a community in Auckland that says that it is fast"?!? Or not?

It's not isn't it?

And stay there? Go on! Please!!

No seriously, the whole roaming thing is valid! You can also wait to get your voda 3g card and take it to Palmy / Dunedin and be in the same situation. You really don't need to go to Japan to make your point!

If you can find an internet connection when you’re travelling, you should ask your chaperone.

The point about a data card is not to be able to connect anywhere in the world yet, (for EV-DO or any other technology), it is to connect more freely. One day all the Telecos in the world will be friends, and there will be one technology and we will roam freely, but in the mean time, I spend more time in NZ than Japan and rather than pay more, fry my nuts, and surf slow while I'm here, I'll use my T3G card and be happy.

I can make my points more clearly if you like, but that will involved more text and I'm worried you’re using a GPRS connection which may crash before you get to the last sentence ;-)
