Telecom will be expanding EVDO to cover approximately 75% of the population by Christmas.

I find it a coincidence that up until a few weeks ago Vodafones network was still ready for launch in July. The whispers started a few weeks ago of substancially increased EV-DO coverage and suddenly now Vodafones network won't be complete in July but later in the year!

Does the delay in Voda launching mean they will also have 75% coverage?

The whole % of population thing is rubbish really! Telecom are definately going to cover more places (looking at the list they published yesterday) than Vodafone had been planning for their 3GSM network. Vodafone have not been keeping all their MED spectrum records up to date though with their 3G licences so other than somebody at Vodafone actually publishing a list I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

BCL are definately working some big hours in Wgtn building new sites, there have been another 6 or so 3G only sites that have gone up over the past few weeks but more on the go at the moment. One thing that will be interesting is one of the new 3G only sites in the Hutt that should provide good coverage to an area that has crappy inbuilding GSM coverage at the moment!

Thus forcing people in the Hutt to buy pricey new 3G handsets instead of GSM, since the GSM coverage will not improve at all. Cunning...

wow!! do voda plan on doing this more going forward?? If Telecom said they were going to build a communications system (mobile / fixed line whatever) and not provide basic services to the masses, they'd be regulated in a second!!

If only Telecom were based overseas and seemed like an attractive foriegn investor to the government, then they could play that way too!! (rather than a local asset that pays a million dollars as day intaxes)

Imagine if Telecom had been allowed to shut down 025 when it made commercial sence!

Nice... but I need a EVDO handset with bluetooth before it becomes practical. I wonder what my chances are of that happening anytime soon.

from some other threads it seems Voda are putting in 3g in major centres but the same infill that Auck, Welly & Christchurch are getting is not happening in those centres

Voda's $200 mil budget may be blown somewhat now, if they want to match 1xEVDO that Telecom are launching in most major towns and Cities then they will have to install a whole lot of WCDMA sites to do so, thats a WHOLE LOT

Telecom has the upper hand due to it's signal propagation on existing CDMA 1x & EVDO

It will be interesting to see the next move considering Voda have alledgedly put back their launch a few months again. Must need to reevaluate the budget?
