Are there any independant PTT servers out there that are available for anyone to use? Most of my friends and I have PTT capable phones but we are on different carriers and some carriers here in Australia have made not mention of even setting it up.

Alternatively is there any software out there freely available to set up a small server, I have some old computers and could set one up for my friends.

It depends on what phone you are using. There are a couple of services that offer push-to-talk functionality on any network, basically using GPRS for transport. Good if you have a flat fee plan.

These are programs for Symbian and Windows Mobile. Check Fastchat for example.

Hmm. Looking at their pages it looks like they have moved to work with operators only - they used to have downloads and sales of software to individuals...

Thanks Mauricio,
A couple of us have the Nokia 6680, others have have iMate's and I think a couple have the Nokia 5140. There are settings available inside the handsets as PTT is already pat of the phones (at least the Nokia phones). So I was actually hoping to use that rather than additional software if it was possible.

How does Push to talk actually work? I assume it has some WAP gateway which sends off WAP push alerts to the mobile on the reciving end & then simply shunts an "AMR" file through GPRS to the receiving phone. I've tried looking up info on it but it's scarce.

anyones help would be appreciated!

Not right up on the technicalities, but that sounds about right. It is possible to have group conversations with PTT also.

Check out www.openmobilealliance.org they defined the PoC spec. There are a lot of technical documents on their site, I found one that descriped the OMA PoC spec in detail but can't recall exactly where on the site it was.. good luck! :-)
